The sleeping bear snored as she was lowered to the ground via heavy ropes, but as soon as she hit the ground and heard the dogs howling, she awoke and took a swipe at one of them. She then dropped off into slumberland again. The next big job was getting the limp bear back to town for vehicle transport to her new home. They put her on the back of Mclain Mechams horse, along with Mclain to help steady her. The horse objected by bucking. This meant that Cinnamon had to be transported back to town just as its done in ual by his or her partner. It knows no economic, racial, ethnic, religious, sex or age barriers. The cycle of abuse includes a mounting of tension, erupuon of violence followed by excessive apologies and promises to change. The final stage is a move toward starting the cycle over again, except that abuse conunues to escalate as the relauonship continues. Education is the key. People m ust be aware that abuse is a crime, too often a violent crime, and there is never any excuse for hitting or abusing another person, she added This week has been declared Domestic Violence Awareness Month, according to the Dept, of Human Services. According to statistics, family violence is on the increase. Twenty percent of all murders in the U.s. area committed within the family. The healthy, chubby 200 pound female bear, well fed on local garden produce was finally treed by hounds just west of Tropic. She was tranquilized with a dart gun and captured. In the early morning hours last Saturday, DWR Houndsman Clint Mecham heard his hounds barking and looked out the window to see the bear just a few feet away between him and the shed where he kept his tranquilizing gun. The bear took off. Mecham took his hounds and headed out on the trail, only to find that the hounds were going on the wrong scent - the wrong way. A quick reverse brought them back into town. More dogs joined with dogs up to a mile ahead of the trackers. Along the way a dog was swiped by the bear when it got too close for comfort. Soon the dogs howls changed to barking - a sign that the bear had been treed. Mecham prepared to dart the bear but found that the carbon dioxide cartridge on his gun was dead. Most people think bears are slow and cumbersome, said Clint Meacham, an 8 year veteran of the DWR. But theyre fast enough to catch a deer or elk calf. They have big lungs and an enormous capacity for endurance when chased. Norm McKee, DWR wildlife biologist came from Panguitch with his pickup to move the bear to her new home.
