I know the first semester of college can be tough -- 1 just wasnt expecting it to be this tough. My first semester had been spent in a lot of carefree fun activities. Too many to allow me to receive a decent grade. The thing that concerns me most, my father continued, is the faetthatyoudidnteven try. These grades dont tell me that youre not smart enough to succeed in college They tell me that you didnt put forth any effort. If you dont learn anything else from your first semester, youre going to learn that if a thing is worth doing at all, its worth giving it your best effort. Anything less than that is a waste - of time, money and talent. You ve got one semester to see what you can do when you really try, he said, as he turned to leave the room. Arent you curious to know how far your best effort can take you As it turned out I was. I didnt become a Rhodes Scholar or any - -- Preliminary registration for Utah's Utah Special Olympics will hold thing like that. But I tried harder. My grades improved significantly. Every once in a while I attacked a project with my whole heart and soul, and found that my best effort was usually pretty good. Im no different than a lot of folks that way. Many of us try to cruise through life, expending only as much energy as needed to keep ourselves afloat. Once in a while to we achieve the level of excellence we are capable of. Then we slip back into calm waters and resume floating. Life saves its greatest rewards for those who have the strength and courage to escape the comfort zone. They arent necessarily more talented or more capable theyve just learned how to harness the best within them. They refuse to settle for adequate when they are capable of superb. Do Your Best isnt just a good motto for Boy Scouts. Its a powerful philosophy for living. If youre going to do it, whatever it is, do your best. That doesnt mean you have to be the best there is just the best you can be. Joseph Walker could see the disappointment in my fathers eyes as I showed him Some from our backyard too! I am grateful to the American Time to harvest some of that summer garden but the inside will be coarse and gritty with a soft, brown core. If there is quite a size variation, pick the larger fruits first. Store them at room temperature. If you Gardening begins to wind down after Labor Day and harvesting and preparing that harvest for future use becomes the order of the day. Pears are one crop that will soon fit that category. Unlike apples, pears need to be harvested after they mature but before they ripen. Most do not change colors like apples do, and it can be difficult to tell when they are mature. Pears ripened on the tree are not quality fruit. They must be picked green and then allowed to ripen. Ifpicked too young they will shrivel and not develop the bright yellow skin color typical of ripe fruit. If they are harvested too late, the outside of the fruit will be yellow and creamy want them all to ripen at the same time for canning, cover them with a blanket. Ethylene gas which is given off as fruit ripens, will be concentrated and will help the fruit ripen faster. Winter pears such as Bose, Anjou and Cornice are picked two to four weeks later than Bartletts. These winter pears do not ripen properly when stored at room temperature. They require a cold period of two to three weeks at refrigerator temperature.
