Emergency responses to farm accidentsinjuries Farm accidents are a serious threat all year round, however, the summer months are the highest for injuries and deaths on the farm, according to Darwin Jolley, Utah State University Extension Agricultural Engineering and Machinery Specialist The National Safety Council lists the following steps to take for emergency response to farm accidents. Learning them could save a life, Jolley said. If more than one uninjured person is present, one should go for help while the other attends the victim. If alone, stabilizing the victim must be your first priority. Leaving a victim alone for even a few minutes could be disastrous. If the victim is caught in machinery, shut off the engine. Dont attempt to extricate the victim as it might add to the injury. When calling for help, tell authorities that an extrication will be involved so that proper equipment will be brought to the scene. Unless there is immediate danger of fire or drowning, don t move the victim. If the victim is bleeding, it is imperative that the bleeding be stopped. Take a cloth or strip of clothing, press it over the wound and apply direct pressure. If the victim isnt breathing and you do not detect a pulse, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If oxygen intake and blood flow are not soon, brain damage and death are inevitable. If a body part has been severed, locate it so it can be cared for and possibly reattached at the hospital. Cover the victim with a blanket. Try to reassure and calm the victim, but dont offer food or drink. Keep emergency numbers by every phone. Give clear reports and directions. Dont hang up until they have received all information they need.
