Strategic Air announces emergency Command changes plans closure of Electric Lake The Division of Wildlife IR-32- 3, spawning adults over the past two years. The few remaining spawn-er- s are extremely vulnerable to angler harvest as they moved into shallow staging areas in preparation for their spring run. This situation has been aggravated by the decline in Scofields fisheries, resulting in a shift of fishing pressure to Electric Lake. In late May or June, DWR will set up a trap to collect spawning cutthroats. They plan to strip up to 800,000 eggs from brood fish for shipment to the Kamas hatchery, where they will be hatched, raised to fingerling size and stocked into lakes and streams around the state. As many of 45,000 of the young fish may be returned to Electric Re- sources announces the emergency fishing closure of Electric Lake in Emery County. The closure banning all fishing activity took effect Saturday, April 27, and includes Electric Lake and all its tributaries. Electric Lake is Utahs only source of Strawberry cutthroat trout eggs, making this popular of fish extremely important to the states sport fisheries program, said Kevin Christoperson, DWR regional fishFive years of eries manager. drought and reduced stream inflow at Electric Lake have impacted natural reproduction of cutthroat trout. DWRs sampling results show a drastic reduction in numbers of The Strategic Air Command (SAC) has changed its plans to use the route sought by route SAC as an eastern entry into the Utah Test and Training Range. The changes further distance the aircraft from Desolation Canyon, wilderness study areas, habitat for wildlife such as bighorn sheep; recreational facilities at Fish lake; Fremont Indian State Park; and streams proposed for inclusion in the wild and scenic river system. Airspace over Huntington and Price was restrictedcontrolled due to waterfowl refuges near Huntington, and restrictedcontrolled airspace near the cities. The revised route overlies a less used area of the San Rafael Swell. Fish Lake Plateau underlies a por- Lake. The lake has had to undergo certificaa three year disease-fre- e tion period before this process could be begun. A portion of the spawning fish will be allowed to pass the trap and spawn naturally in the stream to preserve the wild nature of the population, Christopherson added. After the spawning run is over, the fish population will be reevaluated and a decision made on reopening the reservoir. To supplement the declining trout numbers, 30,000 seven inch cutthroat, trout will be stocked this year in addition to the normal 45,000 two-inc- h cutthroats that are stocked annually, Christopherson concluded. noise-sensiti- tion of the route. Concerns include the presence of an airfield on the southern part of the plateau; mountains south of the route corridor; waterfowl habitat at Mill Meadow and Forsyth reservoirs; and Capitol Reef National park. The route corridor through these areas will be narrowed to ensure flights adhere to restrictions. An effort was made to avoid Fremont Indian State Park. Endangered species populations in the Cricket Mountains and Delta airport limited modification to the proposed route. Aircraft will stay south of the route center line, ensuring two miles of separation between flights and the park. Since the parks archaeological resources are resistant to d damage, this separation is felt to be adequate. While most children exhibit some or all of these behaviors as they grow up, the child who stalls in any of these difficulties may have a real learning disability. Prof. Smith says that there is often no single cause for learning disabilities and no single answer, much less an easy answer for solving the problem. Having a learning disability does cord. not necessarily indicate a low I.Q. Most experts agree that if a child listed, reel stores up to 1 50 ft. of 16 gauge cord. In other cases, the stages of early childhood experience may have been upset by illness, abuse, or other reasons. In some cases, the problem is remedied by providing the child with a missing experience. For example, crawling has been identified as a necessary motor skill. Children who learned to walk before learning to crawl, or did not stay in the crawling stage very long. may need simple crawling therapy. In other instances, a child who is having trouble with subtraction, for example, may also manifest ..difficulty in P.E. class reversing steps to move backward. With dance therapy to leam how to go backward, the child is then able to leam subtraction. Hyperactivity, dyslexia, attention disorder, and other ways to describe learning disabilities are not nearly as important as the understanding given a child or adult with these afflictions who needs special help or understanding to cope with the world on its own terms. noise-induce- Scofield Reservoir will be treated & The DWR announces plans to treat Scofield Reservoir for removal of roughfish during September of 1991. Treatment is a preventative measure to eliminate reproducing walleye, chubs and carp. Its only a matter of time until walleye ruin the trout fishers, says Kevin Christoperson, DWR regional fisheries manager. Several years of drought and subsequent low water quality have contributed to low survival of trout, resulting in poor fishing. The current small trout population and low water levels make this year an opportune time to treat the reservoir. The reservoir and some reaches of the tributaries will be treated with rotenone, a natural substances contained in the stems and roots of certain tropical plants. It inhibits the fishs ability to take in oxygen. Studies have shown that the substance is safe for municipal waters. Traces of rotenone will remain in the reservoir for up to four week. closed Ultimately it will break down into carbon dioxide and water and will leave no residue in plants, animals or the environment In order to protect the trout fisher in lower Fish Creek, a neutralizing agent, potassium permanganate will be time released at the dam ouLet Restocking will take place in the spring and fall of 1992 with 3 to 5 inch rainbow trout. Fishing will be closed during 1992 to allow the fisher time to reestablish. The 1991 treatment wont be an automatic fix to Scofield s problems, cautions Christopherson. Water quality problems must be addressed and resolved before Scofield returns as a highly productive trout fishery, he adds.
