Show SalinaSun, Wednesday. Mav 3. 1989 2-Thg The Salina Sun You and Your Child: Education in School Success by JIM CAMPBELL Utah Education Association President When John Gardner wrote his book Excellence in the early sixties, he observed that history and literature show various pictures of excellence. He cited the examples of Lincoln writing his second inaugural address with malice toward none, Mozart composing his first oratorio at age 11; Florence Nightingale nursing the wounded at Balaclavia; Leonidas and his four hundred defending the pass at Thermopylae, and Galileo dropping weights from the Tower of Pisa. Since Mr. Gardner wrote that book, the word excellence has taken on a wider use. We see speech makers, anchormen and women, writers and educators employing the word frequently. Here in America the word excellence has achieved a certain position of status. It has become a buzzword. The with problem buzzwords is that usually theyre used so often they become meaningless. That shouldnt happen to excellence. One definition of the word is: The state of possessing good qualities in an eminent degree. Teachers operate on the belief that if they expect a lot from a student, that student will often deliver. My experience is that expecting excellence will work for parents, too. The father who pays a son for leaving the edges untrimmed after mowing a lawn, is in my view, doing the son a disservice. Excellence is probably relative, though. If a girl with a lame leg runs five miles that also demonstrates the state of possessing good qualities in an eminent degree. S he may not break any records, but she did a remarkable job. The key, I think, is to exa lot of our kids, but not too pect much. calendar of events at NSHS A full TALENTED ARTISTS: Students from NSMS entered the Commissioner's Art Show last week, and ten from the school received honors. This past weekend, students from NSHS painted the S on the hill on Salinas east side. It has been several years since anything was done to the NSHS insignia. Many rocks had to be moved - and while they were being moved, it was decided to make the lettering into NS for North Sevier. The students had fun on the difficult project, and there was the usual whitewashing of people in addition to letters. The NS stands out well now on the hill, and the students should be proud of their work. Last Friday and Saturday, a Project Teamwork team from NSHS attended the state convention at the Salt Palace on helping teens say No to Drugs. Their expenses to the convention were paid by the Sevier County Sheriff s department with funds from the countys share of drug money confiscated within the county. There were students from every county in the state attending the convention. Many ideas were exchanged, and information learned that will be used here in local schools during the upcoming year.
