Stay mm NSHS works to solve problem Continued from Page 1 given 12th grade for doing 9th grade work? I cant be held responsible. There are lawsuits everywhere from parents whose kids could not read or write after graduation. Is it because the students Can or Cant, or because they Do or Dont? I cant be responsible for what your kids want to learn. Mr. Jacobsen reminded the group that parents have always been invited to sit in on a class at any time to observe what is going on and to hear the material being presented. Im not failing the students -- - they are failing themselves! Mr. Jacobsen said. A few parents felt that their students were working hard, but were continuing to fail. They said that it was causing some to become dishonest - to cheat in order to get a passing grade. I feel a moral responsibilfor these students, Mr. Jacobity sen said. I feel it is my responsibility rot to certify them if they cant do the work. The graduation certificate means that they have attained a certain level 1 dont dictate that, he added. Principal Smith then suggested an IEP or Individual Education Plan, where the teacher, principal, parent and student all meet together and draw up a plan for the students classwork schedule. The ' four also will determine whether the work the student hands in meets the plan - or contracts guidelines. The plan was approved, and will begin tonight, Wednesday, at 7 p.m. at NSHS. Smith will be teaching the class. The kids need this extra help, he added. Another alternative is for the students to take an English class at Sevier Tech - either alone, or in conjunction with the nightclass at NSHS. Mr. Jacobsen said that as NSHS is on a semester system, he would be wiling to work with the students and help them with assignments that need to be redone. He would then give a semester grade at the end of the quarter, instead of two quarter grades. After more discussion, Mr. Smith suggested the following: The F grades would be changed to T (incomplete), giving the students a chance to make up back work and raise their grade. Night classes or Tech classes for the students. A review would be made on the (Outcome Based Education curriculum from Kindergarten through Twelfth grade to see if there are any changes needed to insure that the material is being presented and absorbed on each level. Mr. Smith also said that he would see if testing could be done to see how students are comprehending subject matter, and that recommendations would be made from this point on as to the direction of OBE from this point on. Mr. Smith thanked the parents and said he appreciated their concern. The problem will be he solved, emphasized. Appointments were set up with the parents, students, Mr. Smith, and Mr. Jacobsen, on Monday. The student was asked his or her preference as to night school, Tech, or none, and then agreed that the work not completed would be caught up, and that the 4lh quarter grade would be a passing one. $75 cash rebate on a new electric water heater FREE SAVER PACK to help you cut the cost of electric water heating Call toll-fre- e for details, or visit your nearest Utah Power office.
