Show 2 1 w odiuiB sun MSHA wants safer programs in state's coal mines preposal draft of possible revisions of standards for the use of explosives in underground coal mines is being made available for public comment by MSHA. They seek your comments on this preposal from all interested parties. Written comments must be re- A ceived by July 20, 1984. Some of the proposals for the use of explosives are new, while others are derived from existing standards. A significant new standard that would apply to all underground bituminous, lignite and anthracite mines is the draft proposal for Britton Hansen places y Britton Hansen won first place the Language Arts Festival held recently at Southern Utah State College in Cedar City. There were eight categories in the Festival. Bntton excelled in the most difficult area of all, Poetry. Bntton is a Freshman at North Sevier High, and is in his first year of Spanish under the direction of Jerald DeMille. Britton's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hansen, of Aurora. in qualified shotfirers. This would establish experience requirements for shotfirers, and would require successful completion of a training course or MSHA administered exam. Two new requirements would require mine operators to receive written authorization from district managers before blasting off the solid, and firing more than 20 shots would be permitted at mines where it was determined that conditions were compatible with blasting methods only. These mining methods present an increased hazard of gas and dust ignition in bituminous and lignite mines. MSHA also has announced a training program developed especially for front line supervisors and managers In the coal mining industry. They have prepared the program for safety officials at individual mining companies to use as a supplement to their existing training methods. Coal mine supervisors have the difficult job of keeping themselves and their employees safe. We are hoping that safety officials in the industry will take advantage of this much needed program and make it part of their individual training efforts, said Assistant Sec. of Labor, David Zegeer. Statistics show that coal mine supervisors experience a high number of fatal accidents. The fatality rate among supervisory officials was 44 percent higher than the rest of the industry average. MSHAs district Coupon SCEDGflB managers have received advance copies of the program in order to help them draw up plans for making the materials available to the coal mining companies in their areas. Copies of the program will be available in the coming months.
