The state activities association may have redeemed itself this year by honoring 40 outstanding student athletes in a state academic basketball team. This year, for the first time, the state activities association has honored 40 of the smartest and best examples of citizenship playing basketball. One of those young men so honored is Kelly Nielsen, a North Sevier Senior forward on Coach Bryce Hoggards team. The association could not have chosen a more appropriate action nor a more deserving person to represent NSHS on the team. This type of recognition is long overdue. It has been the opinion of this newspaper for some time that not only should athletes who display excellent examples off the field or court be honored but that this type of behavior should be expected of all who participate. Now that the association has wisely chosen to honor these deserving athletes, perhaps it will go a step further and ask all athletes to set a better example by making two Ds the cut off point for participation in extracurricular activities instead of two Failing grades as it is now. Then perhaps the association will take a more extensive look at the travel time these athletes spend and do something about that. One thing at a time, though, and honoring those athletes who do prove that winning on the athletic field or court is not diametrically opposed to competent (at least) performance in the classroom. This action is a good start but it is ONLY a start. Eugene Weaver Named To 1983s Whos Who Eugene Weaver has been nated and named in Whos who Among American High School Students for 1983. Im sure our editor Hal thought Oh, the publishers daughter wants to write a column. Thatll last three weeks. And I know my Dad was a bit skeptical at the idea. But Ive been writing Just Stuff for almost eight years now and except for my stint in England, I havent missed an issue. This week I just about broke my record. Being a procrastinator, par excellence, is not difficult to put off doing things, my column or anything else, until the final hour. But the final hour for my column is usually Saturday afternoon before the mail goes out. This week however, I lengthened my stay. North Sevier Unit of the American Cancer Society would like to thank everyone who helped in any way with the Singing Valentines. Especially Helen Learning and Gwen Noyes, and all those who gave their time to go sing ; to the Salina Sun, KMTI, KSVC, and thank you to those who bought the Singing Valentines. The Bye, Bye, Birdie, the musical 1 and 2 at the North Sevier High School New Auditorium. being readied at the North Sevier Middle School for presentation on March 1, and 2, concerns the t, romance of a and his secretary, plus the drafting of his rock n roll star into the Army. In a gigantic publicity stunt they all descend on a small Ohio town and proceed to turn it hilupside down. The results are arious and musically rewarding. There is a cast of over 150 Middle School students under the direction of Denise DeMille. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the school, or from students for $2.00, or will be $2.50 at the door. composer-publisher-agen- Dont miss this bright and lightful musical. The most convenient evening I figured is Thursday night. There usually isnt too much going on on TV and there are no discount movies or dances, etc. So I vowed Thursday night, come hell or high water, would be my column night. That was two weeks ago and I have yet to use Thursday evening for writing columns.
