Warships of the United States, Great Britain, France and Italy are at Shanghai to protect the nationals of these nations in Case the fighting spreads to the interaat'onal quarters. It is the duty f every nation, of course, to protect the lives of its citizens when there is trouble. It is equally clear just now that this is as far as the United States will go or should go in the Far Eastern s tuation. While it is true that public sympathy generally :n the United States is it is not to be forgotten that after all the Chinese are not blameless. For years the country has been torn by conflicting armies, headed by factionalists who, in some cases, are little better than brigand chiefs. China has been unable to form a strong centralized government for itself, and is now paying the consequences of d'sorgamzation and lack of national defense. If the Chinese cannot organize and protect themselves it is too much to ask that other nations shall continually do this for them every time a foreign foe arises. The Japanese claim that they are in China to protect the lives and property of Japanese citizens who have been attacked by Chinese. While the average American may be inclined to believe that the Japanese have gone farther than necessary to do this,; still there is not much we can doj about it. Our principle duty is to see that American lives are safe. Outside of that we have no military duty in the matter and Americans should keep cool in this time of crisis. D.:y Sino-Japane- se supplies are far below normal on the ranges. After several years of short feed because of drouth, range feed this year should be unusually good and it probably is just as well if there are fewer cattle, as this gives the range growth a chance to sort of recuperate and will increase carrying capacity in many districts. There are reports of heavy death losses of ewes and early lambs in many parts of California a result of heavy rains, cold weather and shortage of feed last fall to build up resistance of ewes. Losses through the sheep raising districts are variously estimated at 5 to i 5 per cent, the heaviest in the past ten years. Spring lambs are about 2 weeks later th:s year than last, and it is likely that Californias early lambs will be marketed over a longer period of time than usual. This is because of the promised abundance of cheap feed and it is believed that owners will feel disposed to market their lambs at somewhat heavier weights than the majority of trade interests desire. There has been little to inspire confidence in the market since the opening of the new year. Hog and cattle prices generally over the country are lower than during any period in 1931. It appears that consumer purchasing power for the present, at least, is less than at any time in many years. North Sevier is happy to announce, the completion of the cataloging of the books, in the school library. Miss Anderson, together with the class in publications, has been working for some time and now the books are catalogued and ready for use. The cataloging was done according to the Dewey decimal system. The school is very grateful for the willing help Miss Anderson has given in getting the books in order for use, and wishes to thank her for her part in tiawork. negro-talkin- ct . Livestock: GATES President We live in a modern age of fast production. Competition is spurring Stock Growers as well as farmers to bigger and quicker yields of meat, lambs, wool and milk. Just as the elements taken from the soil must be put back in the form of fertilizer, so the animals body, sapped of its strength, must be rebuilt To preserve their strength and insure sound teeth and normal bone structure, minerals must be fed. We know of no better, safer, or more economical way of supplying these minerals than by daily feeding of Red Star Salt. Red Star Salt is Natures own containing as it does the body elements of builJing Calcium, Iodine, Phosphorous and Iron elements that promote good digestion, stimulate blood circulation, buitd bone, and tone the system generally. They take it from natural Mineral Salt licks. They are rugged; the growth of their young is normal; the female grows almost to the full size of the male; they are peculiarly free from the maladies that afflict domesticated animals.
