"Then why the fireplace? "Thats what Im going to find out ! said the spinster grimly. She started to rap the mantel, testing it for secret springs. It was Dales voice, Jack! They haven't found Mr. Anderson?" Dale shook her head. "Not yet." She turned toward her aunt. Miss Cornelia had begun to enjoy herself once more. With the departure of Huiiey and Miss Cornelia, and tiie resulting darkness due to their taking the candle, Lizzie and Dale were left alone. Afterward she was, mercifully not to remember what came next; tiie figure was perhaps intent on what was going on outside, or her own movements may have been as silent as Its own. That she gut into the mantel room und even partially closed it behind her Is certain, and that tier description of what followed is fairly accurate is borne out by tiie facts as known. The Hat WUS working rapidly! She heard his quick, nervous movements; apparently lie had come hack for something und secured it, for now lie moved again toward tiie (four. Hut he was too late; they were returning that way. She heard him mutter something and quickly turn tiie key in tiie lock. There was no doubt In her mind as to his identity. It was-tiiHat, and in a moment more lie would be shut iu there with her. She tried to scream and could not, nnd tiie next instant she wus iu a dead faint on tiie floor. Hailey meanwhile had crawled out on tiie roof and was carefully searching it.
