Allen Is now engaged in making a tour of North Carolina and adjacent states, giving exhibitions of Inlaid woodwork craftsmanship, which vocation he learned while a prisoner in Virginia, the finest example of which Is a small table containing 75, 000 pieces of wood of 79 varieties, worked together into ap intricate pattern of his own designing. Allen Is a modest, retiring man of medium height, about sixty years of age, although he does not appear to be over forty-fivlie is intensely religious, and since taking up his residence in Leakesville has been active In church work. Allens friends are insistent that he is Innocent of any deliberate intention' of taking part in the shooting up of !he court. M. Foster, commonwealths attorney, received his death wound, and Stuart Worrell, a juror, was shot through the leg. Miss Elizabeth Ayres, a witness, received a death wound. Sidna Allen got a bullet through the muscles of the arm, which entered his body, but it was not serious. Floyd Allen received a bullet in his knee. Cause of. Trouble. of the trouble dates The beginning t back to May, 1911, when Garland Allen, one of several brothers, who was B Primitive Baptist preacher, went to the door of his meeting house to quell a disturbance In his yard. lie found two of his nephews, Wesley and Sidna Edwards, among the trouble makers. He was hit with a stone said to have been thrown by one of these Jioys. Papers were served on the Edwards brothers, accusing them of disturbing public worship. They left Virginia, going to Mount Airy, which Is Just across the line In this state, where they secured employment. They were and the youths released, while the officer was beaten over the head with the butt of a revolver. The boys were later recaptured, tried and made to 6erve six months. In the meantime charges were pre, ferred against Floyd Allen for Interfering with an officer in the discharge of his duty. Ills case was scheduled to be heard at Hillsville, March 13, 1912. Judge Instructs Jury. of Patrons. The use of a hotel clerkship as a schocfl for thievery is one of tiie latest novelties of the underworld of Baris, and it occurred in one of the foremost hotels of this city. Many thought that Floyd Allen worea steel breastplate, but none was found on him when he was arrested. It was generally claimed at the time that four bullets had struck him In the breast without effect. Floyd was d and quick on the trigger. One bullet struck bint In the knee. The Allens retreated to a livery stable, where they had left their horses. Here Floyd became very sick, and was unable to mount. They left him with his son, Victor, a quiet, peaceable sort of fellow, who was not supposed to have participated in the fighting. Floyd and Victor were arrested at a hotel at Hillsville, where the older man had been taken for treatment. They were removed to the Jail at Roanoke. Floyd delighted to tell the story of a fight he had with his brother. Jack, years before, when they both fell at the first shot from the other's weapon, continuing to fight ns they lay on the ground. Five of the thirteen or more bullets In Floyd Allens body were placed' there by his brother. Jack. Eacli of them swung very near to world, but both were restored to health and strength again. Such was the life these people lived, and yet they were men with more than average education, and with more property than the average mountaineer. They were kind and clever in their dealings with their friends, honorable in matters of debt. They were no cabin mountaineers.
