Well play together at keeping store All of which, of course, makes a pretty gloomy picture. Maybe our country will have that many people in 2000 and maybe it won't. A lot of things can happen in seventy-fou- r years, and beside that, there are still a lot of wide open spaces in America. And the situation is not perhaps as serious as it looks. Necessity is generally the mother of invention, and it is likely that our scientists, including those at Chicago university, will solve the problems set out above, as rapidly as they become acute. But at any rate the scientist above quoted brings the first word of real cheer to the farmer. When the country gets a population of over 300 million he is going to have to raise some real food to feed Will Buy Machinery the hungry masses. Prices will go up and maybe land in the MidEarl S. Their citizens have climbed useless obstructions (mounting tax' bills) in the vain endeavor to have the city operate street railway and electric properties better and cheaper than private enterprise. 1 he voters eventually climb the obstruction of debt only to find that they have paid more for municipal service erty this summer. than they would have paid for as good or better service under private ownership. In Seattle, the mountain of municipal debt has gotten so high that the people cannot see over it. For years San Francisco citizens have been trying to stampede themselves into buying another street railway in addition to their present municipal line, which, if charged taxes like the private line, would show an enormous annual deficit. There is no occasion for San Francisco buying its street railways, for it now has about the best service and the lowest fare (five cents) of any city in the United States. All it could do would be to load itself with debt, develop a great street railway political machine, and eliminate the private competition which now forces the present municipal line to maintain a high standard of service. After watching the people of New York, Cleveland, Detroit and Seattle struggling to surmount uncalled-fo- r burdens bt which they created themselves, one wonders whether San Francisco will also handicap itself in such a useless manner.
