Awards of Increased compensation have been made on 54,499 disability claims and 42,994 death claims. Shortly after the passage of the act a special unit of the United States veterans bureau was established in the Washington office to conduct a general examination of all claims on file to ascertain w .under the new law were payable. Although the bureau received 83,418 new claims subsequent to the passage of the act, It is Impossible to estimate the exact number of claims filed directly as a result of this legislation, the largest part of which deuit with the payment of benefits where claims had already been filed. There were on July 31, 192C, 12,300 compensation claims of veterans pending adjudication in the veterans bureau, including its 54 regional or field offices. On the same date there were 228,399 active disability awards, or claims on which compensation was being paid In various amounts, 28,721 of which were permanent and total cases and 104,453 permanent partial disability cases. Compensation was being paid on 79,184 death claims.
