Some people are so unfortunate as to have pained their first Impressions of St. Putrlok from the rollicking old pong which hears his name. I was one of them, but I received n new light on St. Putrlek from one of whose ancestral country he was the patron paint, and now, whenever a flippant thought of the good saint comes to mind, there comes also a picture of the reverential face of a little IrKIt Woman who kept a shop In an old Missouri town, n pleasant shop with u flower garden to the rear. On a certain spring day when the elm trees In the courthouse yard across from the shop lmd begun o the green, and the shop Windows were decorated with shamrocks, some young lenple entered the shop seeking favors and games for u St. Patricks day party. They especially desired a comic head of St. Patrick, the sort that 1ms a wide open mouth, Into which blindfolded players attempt to toss potatoes They found Do such pictures In that shop, and after the other customers had left the proprietor said to me, with a sweet tone of tolerance softening the Indignation that was mirrored on her face: Those girls nre merely thoughtless. Y. m differ-entj- y fectly normal In the position where It Is Incorporated. It is In the aerial circuit and the antenna system capacity is across it. To be sure the coil L would seem to be that antenna capacity, hut that is not quite the case. The Inductances L and LI are In the antenna-grouncapacity system, and the aerial-grounplays Its important part in that lend, this joint contribution constituting the reactance of the circuit. A .0005 mfd. condenser might be used Instead of .001 mfd., if one were sure of what ones aerial capacity was, but the .001 gives a wider margin of safety. The object of the large capacity tuning condenser Is to Insure a sufficient ratio between maximum and minimum capacity, so that the entire broadcast band will be tuned in. Tlve circuit is Inherently simple. Any one familiar with radio can construct It (modifying the grid return If necessary.) A eomfortable panel for this set would be 7 by 14 inches and it would be so laid out that the aerial tuning condenser Is at left, the secondary tuning condenser at right, and the three-circutuning coil, L1L2L3, in coil center. Pet ween the three-circuand Cl would be the rheostat, Rl. The Jack is placed at the opposite point. The tickler would not require a dial. A small knob would suffice, or a two-inc- h vernier dials dial, while four-incshculd be used on the two condensers. A baseboard, If used, would be 8 by 13 Inches, secured to the panel bottom by wood screws. The coil L would be placed horizontally 3 Inches behind the end plate of Cl, while the coll would be mounted perpendicularly on the panel. A socket shelf 2,(s by 13 Inches would be Just as sultnble. Coll Data. L1I.2I.3 may be a commercial tuning coil, the capacity of C2 depending on the coil used. Most often this would be ,(X)05 mfd For those desiring to wind their own coil, a 3 Inch diameter stator form, 4 Inches high, may be employed, the primary LI consisting of 10 turns. Leave space, then wind 45 turns for the secondary L2. The tickler is wound on a 2 inch diameter, 2 Inches high nnd consists of 22 turns. The wire is No. 24 double cotton covered. It Is often more convenient to use smaller wire on the tickler, say No. 20, for It doesnt matter there, on the resistance! score. As a shaft must' penetrate the stator nnd be secured to the rotor, part of the rotor winding will be separated, at least the width of this shaft, and finer wire makes It easier to put on enough turns to get regeneration on the highest receivable wave. The secondary Is to be tuned with 0005 mfd. For .00035 use 55 turns, for .001 use 33. As for the coll L, that will require some experimenting. My own aerial has a capacity of .00027 and the proper coll. In conjunction with a .001 condenser for Cl, happened to he one comprising 31 turns on a tuning. No. 24 DCC wire beused. Put some antenna systems ing will require a greater number- of turns, some a lesser number. It is a good plan to put on 40 turns, then peel em off. as necessity dictates. The set operates efficiently on any of the popular tvpes of tubes, includ tubes. Ing dry-ceMount the condenser Cl on the panel, also the condenser C2. The plate post of the socket, marked I, goes to one terminal of L3, the other terminal of which is connected to the hooked spring of the Jack. It will be noted that in the picture diagram and in the text the grid return Is designated as A plus, and this Is correct for nearly all tubes, although In some few Instances the grid return to A minus, will work better.
