POISON THE POCKET GOPHER Pocket gophers which burrow under the surface of the ground eating the- roots of the plants and throwing, top mounds of dirt take an enormous toll from farm crops annually, the amount of irrigation water that is carried off by these underground runways causes an enormous loss. They can be easily controlled by poison as has been demonstrated by a successfully great many farmers throughout the state. The Sevier County Agriculture the Agent reported following which gives a good idea of the results that can be obtained: A certain farmer had an 80 (acre field which was badly infested with 78 acres of this pocket gophers. 80 acre field was treated at a total cost of labor and material of $10.00 a 2 acres was left untreated as check plot. The following season by actual count it was found that on the w 2 acres that had not been treated (there was 6 active pocket gophers .fend on the 78 acres that had been (treated there were only 15 pocket gophers. The Jroison bait is prepared jbjy sifting strychnine on carrots which have been cut into small pieces about 1 2 inches long by inches square. This poisoned bait is placed in the runway of the pocket gopher. To locate this underground runway an iron probe is used, one end being ,aboi& the size pf a wagon endgatg, rod and the other'?end being about the size of a broom stick. MENS DRESS SOCKS 6 Pair . $1.25 BOYS WORK SHOE essential that a good probe be used as it makes the work easier and better results are obtained. An iron probe made in the following manner makes a very satis factory tool. Take a. 12 or 14 inch inch steel rod and weld piece of It into a piece of inch gas pipe that is about 36 inches long, blunt ir.g the other end of the 'gas pipe. With this probe the underground runway can be located in the fol the new lowing manner. Taking mounds we know that these mounds alternate with the underground run way, so by lining up these mounds we know that the runway will be about midway between a series of mounds. With the small end of the probe we locate the runway and then use the larger end to make a larger opening so that the bait can be dropped into the runway, after which the hole is closed so no light can enter Thus we have the the runway. p uson before the pocket gopher so that it is possible for him to ipiss it and satisfactory results are obtained. Each pocket gopher makes from 19 to 20 mounds, and two baits at different locations in each system give the best results. In cooperation with the U. S. Bio-- b gicial Survey prepared .poison in sifter top cartons has been placed with all the agricultural agents for distribution, selling at 10 cents per caiton.
