Show SAUNA, UTAH, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1924 VOL. 7. Weather Indications No. 26 0 Iisii Coal Hines 8y Real inside knowledge of the gigantic undertakings of the Sevier Valley Coal company, now developing the big coal deposits in Salina canyon, was gained by the faculty of both the grade and high schools of Salina last Saturday. Geological observations were taken, a minute explanation of the immense coal veins un- derlying the earths surface was given and- the proposed plan of development was explained to the faculty and several students who were also in the party. The caravan left Salina Saturday afternoon and the eighteen mile trip was negotiated without any mishaps to mar the pleasure of the travelers The visitors were met by General Manager II. E. Lewis and other officials of the company, and escorted to the various places of interest. The big shaft which has been started, was shown and the plan of sinking to the coal veins was explained. Mr. Lewis told the visitors that two large coal veins had been proven by the use of the diamond drills. The first vein was struck at a depth of 1C5 feet. This vein measures more than eight feet through and the grade of coal is of the highest quality. The lower vein, which is also highly promising, was encounteited at a depth of 345 feet. Gn the surface of a vein measuring thirty inches has been opened and is being used for the boilers. This vein has no equal for heating units in the United States and it is declared the highest grade found any- 30-inc- h where. During his talk to the faculty and students Mr. Lewis stated that the company owned 160 acres of patented land. In addition to this it has- under least 1000 acres from the government. The first vein which the company will drive the shaft in the shortest time possible, according to Manager Lewis, will produce 14,000,000 tons of coal. A larger amount can be taken from the lower vein and altogether the companys prospects are Much of the highly encouraging. has been installed and the machinery first of the week the boilers were fired and operations in earnest will start soon. Following the visit to- - the interesting places about the property the gue-.t- were taken to the large dining s room where a delicious warm supper was served. After enjoying the sup- per an impromtu dance was given and the faculty declared the mine officials princes at entertaining. And incidentally all the visitors have become boosters for the great coal mines which will eventually make Salina and North Sevier a great industrial, manufacturing and shipping center. the meeting of the of Salina Thursday of last week officers for the year were elected as folows: Peterson, president; C. And what a fight that means. And what a victory it means, for never forget that tuberculosis can be prevented and can be cured. You are planning your Christmas gifts now. So-in- , John Barnard, ranger for the Fish Lake Forest Reserve, and well known and highly respected here, had several ribs broken and was otherwise badly bruised, his son Buster Barnard, re- ceived a bad wound on his head which rendered him nuconsciovis for some time, Coach Richardson of the high school, received severe body scratches and was otherwise bruised and Miss Florence Barnard and Miss Ada Burgess were slightly bruised and and given a scare when the car in which they were riding turned turtle last Thursday morning at about 4:30, while the party was enroute to Salt Lake to spend Thanksgiving day with friends. Mr. Barnard and Mr. Richardson were pinned under. the car and the other passengers were thrown for some distance. The young ladies were unable to rescue those under the car and their screaming for help brought the nightwatchman from the sugar factory of the Utah-Idah- o company, which was close by. It was more than an hour, however, before the men were rescued from their perilous position. All were rushed to the hospia' at Payson where they were given temporary treatment. An examination of the injuries received by Mr. Barnard revealed the fact that several ribs had been broken, and late reports from the hospital were to the effect that no internal injuries had been received. He is confined to the Payson hospital and it is said that he is reOthers covering very satisfactorily. of the party who were in the wreck are getting along as well as could be expected. Mr. Barnard and his party left here late Wednesday evening and were enroute to Salt Lake. When near Spanish Fork and in negotiating a sharp curve the car turned turtle with the results as stated above. Rex Barnard, son of J. F. Barnard, when appraised of the accident that :had befallen his father, brother and sister, immediately left for the scene. It is stated that the injured will be able to com- - leave the hospital and return to their homes about the first of the week. g Feast Of Buffalo For Salinate r Arrests Uinta: Those of Salina who braved the The program of deer killing on the early days and crossed the plains Kaibab National forest is being carwhen the buffalo roamed, and those ried out by the Forest sevrice in such who have come into the world since, a .way as to not interfere with the are to have a chance to feast on the plans of George McCormick who has succulent roasts and choice cuts of been given a contract by the Governor Announcement of the membership real buffalo meat, acording to the an- of Arizona to drive a large number of Df the board of directors for the Auto nouncement of Rex aBrnard, man- deer across the Grand lub of Utah indicates a full canyon, reports has been given southern ager for the Salina Meat & Supply District Forester R.
