In answering the above question, Thomas R, Baird, Chief En gineer of the Fresno, California, fire department says that as 61 per cent of fire alarms originate in homes, it is apparent that fire prevention should be taught in the homes as they are responsible foi not only a majority of the alarms but also home fires are responsible for a majority of the lives lost each year. Fresno adopted an organized citizens fire prevention commit tee which has been one of the most valuable assets the city has hac in preventing fires. Every building in Fresno has been visited b members of the uniformed fire department, fire prevention burea and by the boy scouts. Fire hazards were pointed out and thf of property owners and tenants was asked. by the citizens was necessary to wipe out th black fire record which Fresno had earned. For the five years prioi to the reorganization of the Fresno fire department and its campaigi for fire prevention, the annual average fire loss in Fresno was $850, 289. During 1923, the first year following the reorganization, the loss was $187,435. The preceding five year average of fire alarm: was 458. In 1923, it was only 279. The previous five year per capita fire loss was $1 6. 3. In 923, it was $2.2 . Since the reorganization of Fresno on a fire prevention basis three reductions have been made in insurance rates netting the citizens of the tity yearly savings of approximately $350,000. Add this to the reduction in fire losses and it is easy to determine who profits by fire prevention, says Mr. Baird. The good work will continue in Fresno and other cities should follow suit. 1 V 1 1 A LESSON FROM THE ELECTION. The election of President Coolidge is the greatest evidence yet offered to prove that the American people think straight on basic questions. The vote for Coolidge was not a vote for the man so much as a vote for sound principles ot government. The present vote shows that the American people cannot be stampeded by professional political practices which seek to cloud . the main issue. f The election year has also shown that questions like the tariff and discussion of chances in the Constitution no longer seriously (Continued j We close at 7 p.m. except Saturday Salina Meat and Supply Co; The JTost 4 J 2 $ 5 G rocery Store in Salina Ufr-To-D- 1 2 2 2 J 2 2 J J J 1 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 A 8 8 8 8 8 8 ft Member Federal Reserve System JAMES FARRELL, Pres.
