SALINA, UTAH, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1924 No. 23 Coolidge For PresidemtDeni Governor Sevier County Safely In Republican Column Salina voters, republicans, democrats and progressives, turned out in goodly numbers at Tuesdays election and a record vote was cast, nearly 500 votes being polled for the respective candidates. The Coolidge electors, as was expected, carried the city, the candiate receiving 231 votes. Davis, the democratic nominee for president, was second, receiving 175, while the LaFollette followers came third with 87 votes. George Dern, democratic candidate for governor, led his opponent, Mabey by 112. The LaFollette factions were backing Dern and for this reason the majority was boosted. It was an ideal day for an election. A bright, clear sky and a wann sun, made the day a perfect one. At both voting places the best of order was maintained and outside of a few hot debates it was one of the most peaceful elections ever held in the city. In district 14, 73 straight republican votes were cast. The democrats polled 57 and the progressives 11. The republicans and democrats tied on the straight vote in district 15, each recording 52. LaFollette backers voted Coolidge Sweeps Nation with Avalanche of Votes Derns Majority Near 10,000. New Yorlers Get Hi He George H. Dern, democratic candidate for governor of Utah, defeated Mabey, the republican nominee at Tuesday's election by approximately 8000 votes. There are enough seals in the shipment, if placed side by side, to extend from Salt Lake City to Denver, or would make a belt across Utah in both directions. The 1924 Christmas Seal is said to be the most artistic ever produced in all the 17 years during which the annual seal sale has become a rec- - 15-9- ognized and popular institution, , SALINA LIONS ENTERTAINED BY SEVIER VALLEY COAL State Representative Hawley Nebeker District Judge double-barre- CO. Popular Couple Married. Miss Bernice Okerlur.d, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hicks Okerlund and a late student of the North Sevier high school, and Max Sorenson, of this city stole a march on their friends Wednesday of last week, motored to Richfield and wTere quietly married. The plan worked beautifully to mislead the many friends of the two. The bride to be, attended the regular school session until 2:30 when she abruptly left, and she was met by Mr. Sorenson and they left hurriedly for the county seat where the nuptial knot was tied by the county clerk. Both Mr. and Mrs. Sorenson are well and said James II. Wallis, executive secretary of the association. It is done in beautiful shades of red, blue and gold,, and is the equal of any commercial seal put on the market, and advertising experts declare that they should sell readily merely for their decorative value.1 The designs contains the words, Health, Christmas, 1924. Perez and J. Santches, two Mex- -' icans employed in the beet fields near Axtell, had an altercation last ThursSantday evening and in the mix-u- p ches was slightly wounded in the groin by a bullet which was fierd from a gun in the hands of Perez. The wound received by Santches is not regarded as serious, as it did not enter deeply into the flesh. Perez, it is claimed, did the shooting in self defense, charging that his antagonist attempted to stab him and showed where his overcoat had been cut. Immediately after the shooting Santches was taken to the Salina hospital and after the bullet had been extracted the wounded man walked to his camp near Axtell. The controversy which led up to the shooting, is said to have started over a contract which the two men were interested in. The men were digging beets and in a settlement of the money the quarrel started which resulted in the two men coming to blows and the shooting. Deputy Sheriff Carlson, following an investigation of the case by Deputy County Attorney Edwards, placed Perez under arrest and he was taken to Manti and locked in jail pending further investigation, tions and about 2,000 local associations. This campaign has resulted in a saving of millions of lives throughout the world, and in the United States alone has effected a reduction of the death rate in the past 15 yeal:i from 202 per hundred thousand to 97 This is the great work in which the Utah association is a participant. With the closing of the campaign the big fight centered on the governorship and adherents of both Mr. Dern and Gover-Si- x ' noV Mabey battled to the last ute. Due to the fact that the La. Follette factions were in the state for preidential electors, made the fight The progressives, however, had endorsed Dern, and for this reason the fight was somewhat balanced. Normally Utah is Republican and with the Mabey forces at the helm and having the machinery, it made the fight a close one. George Dern, the newly elected governor, will be the big man for the big job, and in his selection the voters have made no mistake. Mr. Dern has been a resident of the state for nearly thirty years and during min-receiv- ed three-cornere- d. j j j in the upbuilding of the.C commonwealth. He has been foremost in developing the mining sections of Utah J?!! and has advocated industries which would result in increasing a bigger payroll for Utah. Mr.V Dern has served as state sen- ator from his county and hrs legisla tive acts were highly commended by both democrats and republicans. The word Health on the seal indicates the enlargement of the tuberculosis movement into a general work for the betterment of public health in all directions. The health program is based on the theory that any educational effort or sanitary measure that tends to improve general health conditions or to prevent any form of disease, leads to the eradication of tuberculosis. The seal was designed by the celebrated artist George V. Curtis of New York. Mr. Curtis is an artist of inFor over ternational reputation. since boyhood, he has sixty years, been drawing and painting. He spent a very large part of his life in France, at Barbizon, the headquarters of the famous Millet school. As a painter of landscapes and portraits he i gained an enviable reputation both i.n Europe and in this country. Man y of his paintings have been exhibited in Paris and other European and American galleries. He has made a special study of the Christmas Senl idea. |
