Tlie cars were destined to bold either forty men or eight horses, but just how tne French were ever able to crowd so many men Into so small a space remains a mystery to most Americans. Salt Lake law-inakin- g That tlie American Legion is organized for selfish purposes for veterans only is easily reluted by tlie thousand of Instances where community development is made subservient to all else. News of Legion participation in every phase of civic betterment is received at national headquarters daily, und recountul of tills gives rise to the belief that the Legion Is rapidly becoming one of the foremost movements in the nation for progress of tlie community. Tlie Interest attached to many of these instances of participation by tliq Legion men brings realization of tlie possibilities of tlie organization to many public officials. One of these, a letter of appreciation of tlie Legion's effort, was written by Richmond L. Moot, chairmun of the city planning commission of Schenectady, N. Y who came forward with a letter of endorsement of the Legion's work In his city. Tlie letter follows : The men who served their country in tlie World war have found another field of service iu time of peace, and within tlie last few years, the Schtn-ecPadpost of the Anarican Legion lias become tlie lending organization it for civic betterment. Single-handesecured tlie creation of tlie city planning commission to plan the future of the city; it stopped the illegal issuance of sewer bonds; it created a Joint committee to study tlie citys finances; it assisted tlie naturalization authorities in securing better knowledge of tlie English language on tlie part of applicants for citizenship; it lias organized and conducted the Scries of public meetings to welcome new citizens; is has conducted a scries of essay contests, the latest being on 'the civic questions In founding city planning In the public schools; and annually furnishes the schools, both inside and outside the city, with a large number of speakers for all patriotic occasions. As will be seen by the diagram, Figure 1, the circuit is the standard three-co- il honeycomb, but uses spiderweb coils Instead. Tlie forms for winding these coils are cut from stiff cardboard 4 Inches In diameter, Into which are cut nine slots equally spaced and 1 Inches deep. This leaves enough space in the center to place the mounting and nlso for the binding posts. See Figure 2. Into these slots Is wound, No. 24 S. C. The secondary coil is mounted stationary, in an upright position on a block of wood and the primary and tickler coils on either side mounted on a special adjustable mounting so that the coupling may be varied. An Idea of how tills was done will be gained from the sketch, Figure 2. A wooden block was mounted on the primary and tickler coils at a angle and a hole drilled through, paral 1 Civic Improvement Is Part of Legions Work y Salt Lake City Firms It any member of the American Legion In Virginia fall to go to the polls to exercise his right of franchise, it will not be the fault of John J. Wicker, department commander of the organization. For Commander Wicker, whose penchant In matters of government has made expression of the will of Legionnaires, ids first objective through his year at the helm. This Is but a part of the aim of Commander Wicker to make his department of the Legion one of the most vigorous, If not the greatest In size. Other points of his program for 1924 call for enactment of the adjusted compensation measure by the federal government, erection of a movement In Virginia as a war memorial, and appointment of a committee In the state body to handle all veteran legislation as has been done In congress. Wicker has been an ardent Legionnaire almost since tlie time of the Inception of the Legion, lie was an organizer in Virginia and was a charter member of Richmond post No. 1. He was elected to serve as a delegate to the St. Louis caucus In 1919, and has attended every national convention since that time. It was through his efforts that the state of Virginia appropriated $5,000 for expense incident to organizing tlie Legion throughout the state, unprecedented in Legion annals. He held the position of first national executive committeeman from that state, and followed tills by a second term, but refused to accept the post for another year. He has served on several important national committees, including tlie Iost Deportation committee, and that which conveyed to tlie Knights of Columbus the action of the Legion in connection with the preferred memorial building. A most unusual distinction given to Commander Wicker was his appointment to tlie National Distinguished Guests committee for tlie Kansas City convention, when he acted as escort to General Diaz during the trip. He di- - John J. Wicker. reeted the first Legion pilgrimage to France as business niiniiiger, and through his efforts saved tlie party thousands of dollars. He was also in charge of tlie unofficial Legion tour in France in 1922. Wicker, familiarly known to his comrades as Jack, is u Kentuckian by birth, though tils parents, both Virginians, were hut temporary residents of that state at the time. In religion lie Is a Baptist, as tie followed in the footsteps of ills father, a Baptist preacher. His grandfather was a Scotch Presbyterian, his grant grandmother a Methodist, his grandfather a Roman Catholic, and he has frequently declared that lie feels kin to all denominations. Jle was educated in the public schools of tlie state and took preparatory training at Peddle Institute In New Jersey, later attending Furman university and tlie University of Richmond, where his ability as an orator brought him to the study of law. lie was admitted to the bar after he attained his majority. Wicker had considerable difficulty in entering service when war was declared. First, he was married and had two children ; second, ids eyesight was defective, lie sought. admission to the first training camp, to be rejected on account of his sight. Then he volunteered In tlie navy, the marine and Infantry, but was refused each time for the same reason. Desperate in his resolve to serve he memorized the eye-tecards, and was accepted as a private in tlie aviation signal corps of the regular army. He received a commission with the air service und went overseas where he served with the Five Hundredth Aero squadron. st Legion Emblem Woven in Navajo Blanket blanket woven by an expert weaver of tlie Navajo Indian tribe has been presented to Bronson M. As these coils are not varied much there will be little wear on the shaft. Flexible leads are used to connect the movable colls and a set of flexible leads are provided so that the B battery may be mounted directly Inside the cabinet. The cabinet must be made large enough to allow sufficient space for the coils to swing. The variable condensers are each 23 plates, which will give a wave-lengt- h range of from about 200 to 600 meters. The panel should be shielded and the shield grounded to the ground binding post. The coupling control shafts are also grounded to this shield. The shield may be of tinfoil. This Is an excellent receiver for the broadcast fan who Is troubled with Interference from various sources. Any degree of coupling may be had by varying the distance between the primary and secondary. For Instance, if Interference Is experienced, the primary is turned away from the secondary a bit and the condensers retuned to the wave length to make up for the change In adjustment, and in all probability the interference will have disappeared. It should be understood that It is Impossible to state exactly how much loading is required in the antenna circuit of any set, since so much depends upon the size of the aerial itself. Where a series condenser Is used, the loading coil should be of such proportions that WEAF on 492 meters Is brought in at nearly full scale, giving sufficient leeway to reach WIP and WOO on 509 meters. Load coils may be honeycomb colls, or may be wound on a tube of approximately the same number of turns. For those In doubt, the best solution is (V construct a loading coil of about 50 turns, with a tap at every ten, and then try them all until the series condenser covers the range as it should. 50-tur- Once a receiving set has been properly loaded, there will be little difficulty in receiving all of the stations on their new wave lengths, although at present some are experiencing difficulty In getting those stations working on waves higher than 403 meters.
