Show THE SAUNA SUN, SAUNA, UTAH BEN GOES TO VASSAR Isle of Solid Iron in Pacific Ocean Koolan, Off Northwest Australia, Has Great Harbor. the world from the point of view of magnitude. It belongs to the class of bedded haematite deposits of sedimentary origin, which comprise about of the total known iron reserves of the world. The Koolan beds are believed to extend under the sea, and may even cover an area of several hundred square miles; and, as it Is the geological nature of this class of deposit to be large in linear dimensions, experts state there is every reason to believe that if mining operations should be begun on Koolan an average grade of GO to 75 per cent of metallic iron could be depended upon for many years. Analyses of four samples taken from Koolan island, concludes the contribution to the Argus, showed the presence of 94 per cent, 02 per cent, 95 per cent and 97 per cent, respectively, of ferric oxide, while of those two most hurtful Ingredients of iron stone, sulphur and phosphorus, there was of the former no trace at all and of the latter .4 per cent, .03 per cent, .03 and .02 per cent, respectively. To realize the value of this deposit one should compare the analysis of some haematite iron ores. Lake Superior yields 58.45 per cent of metallic iron; Newfoundland, 51.88 per cent; Cuba, 57.80 per cent; France, 57.28 per cent ; England, 48.84 per cent to 62.11 per cent; Spain, 50.84 per cent ; China, GO per cent to 62 per cent ; India, G4 per cent to 69 per cent, and Algiers, 43.05 per cent to 57.10 per cent. PIGS AMBITIONS Grunt, grunt, said Brother Bacon, 'some people are queer. two-thir- Melbourne. Far away, off the northwest coast of Australia, 2,000 miles from any city of Importance and many hundreds of miles from the nearest white habitation. Is a spot destined to play an important part In the future of the British empire, writes a contributor to the Melbourne Argus, describing Koolan Island, a veritable lump of solid Iron resting on the sea. This Island lies In the Yampl sound and is only thirty or forty miles off the regular sea routes of western Australia a nugget of black ore, estimated to contain 70,500,000 tons of the metal, probably much more valuable as an actual asset than all the gold that has ever been mined in Australia. The writer, whose account deals at length with a trip to Koolan Island which he had just completed, Is not only Impressed with the material aspects of this newly discovered additional wonder of the world, but speaks of the beauty of the tropical sea wherein this treasure lies. lie speaks of Its untouched loveliness, and says he felt like one of those early pioneers who, first entering Sydney harbor, had revealed to them one of the most majestic of God's handiworks, untarnished by the suburban builder and the advertising agent. Three White Men Slain. "Parts of the island, he continues, carry a fair amount of medium-sizetimber and a number of flowering shrubs somewhat similar to the hibiscus. He noticed a variety of bird life, but no sign of human occupation, although it has been established that natives do, from time to time, visit the island from the mainland. It is said that some yeurs ago three white men who had gone out prospecting were murdered by the aborigines In this vicinity, When, later, their boat was discovered, If was found to contain a quantity of g rich, stone, but it still remains a mystery where they collected d gold-bearin- it Koolan island, which is seven miles long in an eastern and western direction, with a maximum breadth of three miles at Its eastern end, Is 070 feet high near its center, and rises almost sheer from the sea. It is one of several islands almost parallel to the mainland, forming a magnificent harbor, perhaps ten miles long by a mile wide, with deep water everywhere, sheltered from all prevailing winds. Here in time of war, says our observer, a fleet might find shelter, but preferably it is here that a fine mercantile harbor might be established as part of the development of Australias great but at present almost empty Norwest. The outcrop of iron ore, which forms the crest of a ridge on the southern side of the island, is in many places 100 feet thick and of apparently all solid metal. A very large part of this ore could be obtained without the expense of removing any overburden. Our observer says: Beds Extend Under Sea. This is a mining project from which conjecture and uncertainty have been almost entirely eliminated; the very unusual and complete exposure of the ore bodies In the wonderful seacliff sections available make It possible to dispense with a great deal of preliminary work, and attack the lode with such certainty that both quality and quantity can safely be regarded as already proved. One can actually see and handle the ore bodies in the cliff along the whole length, and for a depth of as much ns GO feet. The estimate of exports 7G, 500, 000 tons refers only to the ore obtainable above the high-watmark, mostly by Intensive open quarrying. mining might even double the quantity of ore available. Thus Koolan island ranks high among the great Iron deposits of well-know- They are always worrying about something or other. Now we do not worry. We do not say : We wonder what it will do torn o r r o w and whether It will rain or be fine. We do not plan picnics, and so we do not think ahead, nor do we plan anything. A picnic would never go in pig circles, for when the children give picnics I hear the different ones saying what they will take to the picnic. Now fancy a pig wanting to take along something for someone else! But they worry about so many things people do ! They wonder If they are going to pass their examinations and if they are going up Into another grade the next year. "What do they want to go up into another grade for when they were all right In the one they were In? Do you suppose Id want to go np into a higher mud patch when I have such a nice one here? Mercy, no; Im too sensible. And then people worry for fear someone will not like something they have said. Why dont tlley just grunt and squeal and If no one else likes It well, let them go on grunting and squealing and pleasing themselves. People will fret that maybe they won't be famous later on. They want to be great and to have others admire them and say to them; My dear young man, or, my dear young woman, or my dear boy or my dear girl, you deserve the great success which has come to you, and I, for one, congratulate you. Ive even heard them making up imaginary speeches which may be said to them some day. They have so much qmldtion. And then they are always looking ahead. When they got older they will do or when the summer comes they will have a good ting', or next week when there Is to be a party they will enjoy themselves. That is the way they talk. I hear them ! But though they look down on pigs I think I could give them some good advice. Why dont they follow the examples set by pigs? Theyd doubtless be much shocked at such a suggestion. But we dont look ahead that Is, not unless food is coming our way. But we dont look clays and weeks and months and even years ahead. We live In the present. Look at us, and you will see how free from worry we are ! We're not bothering ourselves over lessons; were not trying to be great; were not hoping to be famous or successful or rich or anything! Were just pigs, happy, contented, grunting, squealing pigs. To have our backs scratched Is joy, and food is bliss. Why strain after great things almost out of reach? They say pigs have no ambitions. And it is trie. But we have ambitions in this way: We are ambitious that no worry should come to us, no bother, no effort; were ambitious to lead our nice, lazy, muddy lives in perfect greedy,in muddy peace the barnyard. You may say that these are not ambitions and that we cannot be and peaceful But we greedy. have our own ways and if we do not become as famous or ns wise as people do, at least we save ourselves a lot of fretting and worrying which they do. Grunt, Grunt, and These men were not trying to hang Franklin. They were just moving the statue from Pearl and Frankfort streets, New York, to its new home at Vassar college, Poughkeepsie. n The situation of Koolan island, with deep water to within a few feet of the lode, makes for easy working on a large scale-- . So favorable Is the situation that with very little trouble the ore could be sent direct from aq open-cu- t quarry into the ships hold without intermediate handling.
