TO STAMP I a ILLITERACY effort for the stamping out of illiteracy in Oklahoma is now in progress under direction of the American Legion. Dr. Frank II. chairman of the department of Americanism of the state Legion organization, is in charge of the work and l as developed a novel plan to educate those unable to read or write in state-wid- e Mae-Orego- r, that state. to recent surveys, there are 50,804 illiterates In the state, of whom 5,403 are foreign born. It is hoped that it will be possible to inAccording clude all persons coining under tliis classification in the Legions plan for education. To this end the aid of educators. school organizations and of local officials lias been enlisted through Doctor MacGregors otlice. The method to be used is known ns tile Jones plan, so called from its Introduction to the Greer county schools by Will C. Jones, superintendent and a Legionnaire. The first step Is the organization of principals clubs, whose members are the beads of all schools in the district. The work of Americanization is thoroughly outlined to these men, and they pay personal visits to every illiterate in their district, offering assistance through the Legion plan, tabulating notes and making suggestions that may he ot use to volunteer workers. The volunteer workers are to come from the teachers and students in higher classes.
