Time and again w'orthy drives are undertaken in these areas for such things as community parks, swim pools, little league equipment and so on. And as many times as these drives get underway, businessmen in the community are always contacted first, and continually they are the big donors. Then comes the thunder-cla- p there is one or more connected with these drives that says we can get this through the catalog, or I know a fellow in such and such a city that can get this for us at wholesale. All this time, the merchant who has so generously gone deep into his pocket to provide the money for these projects, is selling the same items, or one that is comparable. His prices may be the same, or they may be a little higher, due to transportation, etc. These wholesalers or mail order houses can easily afford to sell cheaper under the circumstance they dont have to dig up money no kick back so to speak. As necessary to purchase the equipment a result, the entire purchase price leaves the community, and the community in turn finds itself that much poorer. We would admonish those who ask for support to give after all, the money bag support, regardless of where they live has a shallow bottom. Reporter, did a piece back in April on the art of selling paper-back- s that so delighted us that we have waited a chance to pass it along. Mr. Wrights inspiration came from reading the paperbacked edition of a truly great contemporary novel, and which, by his own account, is about as lurid as a Baptist Sunday School primer. According to a blurb on the back cover, however, this was a lurid tale of animal passions, the implication being, according to Mr. Wright, that it was printed illegally in France and smuggled over on a cattle boat. Wherefor this writer deduces that: Somewhere in the canyons of New York City there must be a flourishing business where hordes of writers produce the promotional paragraphs to put on the back covers of books they have never read, on the assumption that the reading public will never read anything that isnt An exciting story of the raw and lurid, etc. Mr. Wright admits wistfully, that he might be had by some wealthy publisher desiring to spark up old books.
