Show Soil Fertility . . (Continued From Page 5) be done with proper management right on the ranchers own meadows. Fertilizer trials were located on selected meadow sites where local rancher practices appeared as nearly typical as possible. Properly managed meadows were difficult to find, but some fields under reasonably good management were available for fertilizer trials. All types of meadows showed a marked response to the use of commercial nitrogen or phosmeaphorus. On dows, for example, hay was grown for only $6.00 worth of nitrogen fertilizer per ton of hay produced. Quality hay produced right on the ranch for $6.00 per ton would certainly do much to eliminate the squeeze currently being felt by intermountain ranchers. This is especially true during drought periods when the rancher has to go outside to purchase expensive hay and supplements. Improved irrigation management and recommended species of grass would certainly have increased yields, and net returns still farther. Quality of hay, a very important item often overlooked by ranchers, was improved by use of fertilizer. Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer increased crude protein content of meadow hay. Better hay quality pays off in many ways, such as faster gains, better calf crop, and less total hay required per day per animal. What could good management do for the economy of Humboldt County? Seventy thousand acres of meadow hay land currently producing 28,000 tons of hay. If meadows were improved, properly irrigated and fertilized, hay yields would increase to at least three tons per acre. Humboldt County ranchers could then harvest an additional 182,000 tons of hay, having a value of more than 3.5 million dollars. This kind of money would certainly do much for the financial well being of the rancher and the whole community would benefit. This is not a pipe dream it can be done. But it will take the best efforts of the Soil Conservation Service, County Agricultural Extension Agent and Soil Conservation District Cooperators working together. Proven research results on meadow management must be put to use on Humboldt County meadows before increased hay yields and profits will be realized. semi-improv- cost-pri- FERTILIZE BEFORE PLANTING Qfl CORN 0 0 SUGAR POTATOES BEETS SMALL GRAINS There are many advantages to early fertilization in most western areas you get the job done before theate spring rush; plants get the nutrients they need for an early start; early application checks water run-of- f and increases water-holdincapacity.
