Show Gan You Grow A New Car From Your Alfalfa Crop? . Keith B. Campbell Western Phosphates Inc. If you have a 1956 $46.60 per acre leaves $18.55 excar that youd like to trade in tra net profit per acre merely low-price- d on a shiny new 60 model, and 80 acres of land planted in alfalfa, you may actually be able to grow the cash difference for your new car from the al- land youve falfa right along. Sound if m been using incredible? your alfalfa crop phosphorus-deficie- nt Reports from cultural J colleges It isnt, growing soil. Western agriis show that growers can achieve spectacular increases in alfalfa yields and profits by applying phosphate fertilizer to soils that need it. And to prove that the additional net profit can be enough to put a car in your garage, look at the results of this field study conducted by the Utah State Agricultural College Experiment Station. In a test on irrigated alfalfa land at Castle Dale, Utah, 103 pounds of phosphorus per acre increased the alfalfa hay yield from 2.42 tons per acre to 4.75 tons per acre an increase of 2.33 tons for each acre harvested. For alfalfa hay selling at $20.00 per ton, this would be an additional crop value of $46 60 per acre! This s not all profit, of course, because the following costs must be subtracted: Cost of fertilizer, $10.80 per acre; applying fertilizer, $1.00 per acre; harvesting and hauling additional yield, $16.25 per acre. Additional net cost per acre, $28.05. This additional net cost of $28.05 per acre, subtracted from the additional crop value of new-mod- from the use of phosphate fertilizer! For 80 acres, this additional net profit would total $1,484.00. Now, for that car. A new Ford, Plymouth or Chevy sells for about $2,500.00. And your 56 model should be worth approximately $1,000 in trade at Blue Book rates. This means that your extra alfalfa profit from one seasons use of phosphate fertilizer will just about cover the difference. But this isnt all. Even when your new car is in your garage, your extra alfalfa yield will continue to pay dividends through higher protein content, and a higher phosphorus level. These added nutrients mean more pounds of beef per ton of hay, and therefore, more profit from your livestock! If you arent sure that your alfalfa land is producing all it should, a soil analysis may be well worth your while. If a plant food deficiency exists, the chances are youre losing money. You can turn this loss into extra profit by applying the proper fertilizer, even if you must borrow the money to do it. Here's a ratio between the total amount of nitrogen Utah farmers and ranchers should have used last year compared with the total amount actually applied throughout the state," Charles W. Bourg, U. S. Steel crop and soil scientist, left, explains. Studying the over-al- l percentage comparison is L. G. Bywater, superintendent of the Nitrogen Plant at U. S. Steel's big Geneva Works, near Provo, Utah. Studies compiled by agricultural colleges and state and federal agencies show that the total use of nitrogen by Utah farmers and d ranchers in conjunction with other plant foods is only about of the total amount recommended for all crops grown in the state. Individually, these recommendations vary by crop, local soil conditions and as a result of previous farming practices.
