Although a basic reading program, ' as such, is not a part of the junior high curriculum, it is an integral part of each subject area, and remedial classes are given for those students needing ISO ! extra help in this skill. The following is a description of the special reading program as it is carried out in the Richfield Junior High School: Since everyone prefers to do the things he does well, and which are most interesting to him, the first project in the reading skills program is to find the comfortable reading level of each student. This is accomplished by using a series o fsurvey tests in spelling, word recognition, and vowel and consonant discrimination. Other tests help to evaluate the stu. . . dents skill in understanding word and sentence meaning, syllabification, dictionary use and general interpretation of the material he has read. The results give an idea of the students ability, and also indicates areas in which he needs more help. The daily lessons include short drills, which stress phoen-eti- c analysis of unfamiliar words, prefix, suffix and root word study, along with practice reading, writing and spelling exerYour cises. These drills are aimed at helping the student in his independent word recognition. THE Some lessons give the students experience in summarizing and organizing material, analyzing story problems and plot structures, and use of the dictionary and other reference materials. Some stories and exercises are related to other curriculum subjects. Students are encouraged to discuss and summarize these lessons so that they might be applied to other classroom situations. Oral and written inventories of topics interesting to students are used to encourage them to If your home burned, could read other books.
