THE SALIiiA SUI1 9- ear-old- The Facts On Fiuoridation For more than a decade, communities have been fluoridating their water supplies to reduce the rate of dental decay. Is it effective? Is it safe? Why have fume cities rejected it? In order to answer these and other questions about fluoridation, the Salina Sun today begins a series of authoritative articles discussing all phases of this public health measure. The series is presented in cooperation with Utah District the Dental Society. South-Centr- al The returns are in on one of studies in the most dental research. It begins in 1945 in two comfar-reachi- munities of 30,000 population nestled 30 miles apart along the Hudson River in New York. One of them, Newburgh, added an ounce of fluoride, a white crystalline salt, to every 3,125 gallons of drinking water. The other, Kingston, added no flouride. It served as a "control for comparison to learn if the chemical would aid in reducing tooth decay in children. TV SERIES for Everyone April 7, 1956 "THE LAME SHALL WALK Channel 2 KUTV Saturday, 1:45 p.m. Before the experiment, thousands of children in each community were given, in addition to dental examinations, search-- i n g examinations of blood, bones, tissues and organs, in order to provide a base line. The results provide "irrefutable evidence fluoridation of drinking water is safe and effective, says Dr. Herman E. Hilleboe, New York State Health Commissioner. The children in Newburgh were found to have overall reduction in tooth decay of 58 per cent, as compared with the children in Kingston. Results began to show early in the experiment. Dr. William A. Brumfield, Jr., of the State University of New York, points out that it looked for a while as if the structure of the study would break down because the citizens of Kingston, noting the rapid drop in dental decay among Newburgh children, began talking of starting fluoridation, too. This actually occurred in Michigan, where a similar controlled study involving Grand Rapids and Muskegon began a few months before the New York In July, 1951, undertaking. Muskegon decided it would no longer serve as a control and began fluoridation. Grand Rapids children varying from 66 to 18 per cent in cent The in per ecidence began accumulating so early in both the New York and Michigan studies, that a number of other communities started fluoridation promptly. None has regretted it. In Brantford, Ontario, where 10-ye- ar that s. A scientist could scarcely devise a more rigorous test on humans for safety of water fluoridation than nature has provided in Bartlett, Texas. Fluorides occur naturally in the drinking water of this community at eight times the recommended level. In the nearby community of Cameron, there is little more than a trace of fluorides in the long-rang- e drinking wter. To determine if the excessive amount of fluorides had any effect on the residents of Bartlett, scientists from the National Institutes of Health compared Bartlett health records over a period with the records of inhabitants of Cameron. The Bartlett residents in the study had been drinking water for an average of 37 years at the time of the final examinations. Yet, there was no difference between the two towns in death rates. There was no significant difference in blood pressure changes, arthritic conditions, sight or hearing, tumors, cysts, bone fractures or hormone disorders. The only difference, entirely expected as a result of earlier e observations i n a was mottling of communities, the teeth in Bartlett residents. This condition does occur in controlled fluoridation. Conducting the study were Dr. Nicholas C. Leone, chief of medical investigations, and Dr. Francis A. Arnold, director of the National Institute of Dental Research, and Dr. Eugene R. Zimmerman of Baylor University college of dentistry. Other specialists also cooperated in the study. 10-ye- ar They concluded: "When the data are reviewed critically, it is clear the medical characteristics of the two groups, with the exception of dental flourosis (mottling), do not differ more than would be expected of two comparable towns, with or without excess of fluoride in the water supply. Before the Commission on Chronic Illness reached its decision to recommend fluoridation of public water supplies in 1954, it investigated any possible harm tc the aged persons of the nation. A committee of distinguished scientists reported finding no evidence that continued drinking of water containing fluorides at the recommended level of one part per million, is in any way harmful to health of adults or those suffering from chronic illness of any kind. Two recent U.S. Public Health Service studies comparing the death rates in 32 fluoride cities and 32 neighboring communities, found them to be virtually the same for heart disease, cancer, brain lesions, cirrhosis of the liver, and other leading causes of death. Dr. Charles Cameron, medical director, reported that the American Cancer Society does not regard fluoride salts to be o r cancer - aggravating. A study conducted among the middle-ageand elderly residents at the Southbury Training School in Southbury, Conn., where water has been fluoridated since 1945, brought this finding by Dr. Herman Yannet, medical director: "We have seen absolutely no evidence of any deleterious effect on these patients. WHAT S Dates for the annual public big game hearings were set by the Utah Board of Big Game Control in a recent meeting held at department of fish and game offices in Sait Lake City. As required by law, the Boaid each year holds a public hearing in each of the states five fish and game districts. Harvest recommendations for the yearly big game seasons are made Ly individuals or groups during these district meetings, and arc considered by the Board in executive session as final regulations covering these seasons are drawn up. These five meetings, with the date, district, place and time for each, are as follows: July 2, District 5, Fillmore, 8:00 p.m.; July 3, District 4, Manti, 1:00 p.m.; July 3, District 3, Provo, 8:00 p.m.; July 5, District 2, Duchesne, 8:00 p.m.; July 6, District 1, 8:00 p.m. The two Meetings were set July 3rd since the July 4th holiday falls within the period chosen for the meetings. Proclamations covering the regulations for all big game hunts in 1956 are expected to be published, and reprints available to the public during late July. That many Utahns and nonresidents alike schedule their vacations during the opening days of the general fishing and deer hunting seasons is evident from the number of inquiries continually coming to department of fish and game offices. A spokesman noted today that the general angling season begins June 9th, and closes on October 14th this year, as set by CoYnmission action in January. Opening date for the general deer season is set by legislative law as the Saturday on or nearest the 20th of October, with the date this year falling on October 20th. Length of season and special type hunts will be set by the Board of B'g Game Control in July.
