Prospects for higher sugar prices for this coming season appear to be good, declared H. J. Sanders, district manager of the o Sugar Company this week, as the sugar beet planting season approaches. Charles H. Brannan, Secretary of Agriculture, has taken definite action, which seems to be taking effect now, in bringing about an increase in the price of raw and refined sugar, said Mr. Sanders. He told of a reported price increase of 55 cents a hundred on raw sugar, and 25 cents a hundred on refined sugar in the past few weeks In the West In explaining the action taken by the Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. Sanders quoted from letters written by the Secretary to industrial users of sugar, and to Senator Ellender, who is chairman of the Senate Agriculture Utah-Idah- 82.11 1.25 WESLEY CHERRT ORSA B. In another letter to Senator Ellender, the Secretary wrote: Our official quota determination pointed out that significant and sustained increases in the prices or raw and refined sugar were needed to maintain and protect the domestic industry. To stimulate this needed increase in prices, the sugar quotas were reduced 4,000,000 tons below the level at which they otherwise would have been set I know that you are aware, as we are, that 60 far, the various actions we have taken have done no more than check the decline in prices. A rise in prices, however, should follow. It is quite apparent that actual sugar consumption in recent months has been higher than distribution. This depletion of stocks cannot go on indefinitely, and when purchases are finally made in line with the consumption that is actually taking place, prices should respond accordingly. Mr. Sanders said that while the present advances in sugar prices may not be as great as the Secretary of Agriculture indicated, the sugar industry is entitled to, they do reflect a definite trend toward higher prices as a result of the Secretarys action. In advising growers about this years planting, Mr. Sanders said that early planting will mean greater tonnage and higher returns per acre when harvest time comes. He also suggested that growers make greater use of mechanical thinners this year, to cut their labor needs, and to extend the thinning season, so that a better job can be done. He said that the labor situation looks about normal, but growers should become more familiar with machine work, to reduce their dependance on labor in the future, and to cut their operating costs. He said that there will be some company-owne- d machines in the district this year, for grower use. Also, technical assistance will be given to growers wishing to use the machines.
