Every year that the nation has had plenty of jobs open in defense plants, many farmers who would otherwise like to grow sugar beets don't plant the acreage they want because they fear a farm labor shortage. Smpor-- ta , house. Estimates On The sugar industry is about the only agricultural industry in your area where the processing firm takes the lead in procuring labor. Much of this labor is also used by farmers for harvesting their potatoes, fruits, and other Many farmers depend upon sugar company procured labor for seasonal work after planting beets and during harvest of other crops. 1951 Deer Kill Early reports from wardens and checking stations show a 76 per cent hunters success ratio. They also show sex ration of kill to be about 40 per cent doe and 60 per cent buck. While these figures are ibased on the meager crops. So far, one item that is a direct product of the either-se- x law is well worth noting. It appears certain that less dead deer were left on the ranges during this year's hunt than for many years. Reports from Department field personnel and sportsmen alike, bear out this thinking. Last year, 485 sportsmen contacted in one area of hunting, reported seeing 80 dead deer left on the range. This year, 553 sportsmen contacted in the same district, reported seeing only 29 dead deer. These figures come from the Oak Creek Study Unit, under the management of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Another item of note would be the fact that, with the apparent hunter success as so far shown, more hunters will have killed a deer. This compares with other years, when hunters killed two deer, one during the regular buck season, and one on special permit during a later season. Many unsuccessful applicants on these special hunts had not killed a buck during the regular buck season. It Is felt by Game Department spokesmen that there is a more equitable distribution of our deer under the new either-se- x law. Fear has been expressed by many sportsmen that we have overshot our deer herds in some areas under this new law. Should such prove to be the case, these areas may be set up next year for hunting bucks only, or if a serious depletion exists, they may 'be closed entirely. The special late hunts being held this year are few in number, as compared to those held under the old buck law. Since the new law makes no provision for extending seasons or limiting the number of hunters on a district, some special hunts are necessary where overpopulations of deer are to be found or where nuisance deer must be removed from their range. It is to be hoped that the next meeting of the State Legislature will give the controlling body for these hunts the right to extend the deer season andor the number of hunters in such areas. This would do away with the chief reason for the special hunts still held, and give further distribution of the states deer to the sportsmen on a basis. still nmm EM ing. and iras MOVID AND IMMOVID OVIt THI TIAtS, NIW OLDSMOIlirt FAMOUS HYBRA-MATI- IS THI PIBFICT PARTNtt FOB OldawtoUU Ffydr.
