Show First Birthday edtHweC 'Hetoj, MARJORIE PHONE tion. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hampton accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Dear County Agent, Why do we have so many Siberian (Chinese) Elms in this area? Can you name a trees for our locality? Tired of Weeding Seedling Elms from Garden Dear Tired, I believe there are three main reasons for the widespread distribution of Siberian Elms in our area. First, they are well adapted to our conditions. Second, they grow rapidly. Third, they are cheap. At one time, many years ago, I believe the seedlings were given away, the State. free, throughout Maybe that isn't so different. I know a lot of people who would gladly give them away now, except that they do not want to impose the Siberian Elm on friends or neighbors. There are many other deciduous (lose their leaves in winter) trees which will do well in our area. See if you like any on this list prepared by Fullmer Allred, USU Ornamental Horticulturist. Apricot Ash (several varieties), Quaking Aspen, Birch, Buckeye, Crabapples, Honey-locusGinko, Locust, Maple (several varieties). Oak, Pagoda Tree, Plum, American Redbud and Sycamore. If you are in one of the very high valleys, this list may have to be shortened considerably. It was prepared for the State as a whole, but most of the trees named will do well in Sevier County unless you have very special conditions. If you like evergreens, try Arbovitae, Eastern Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, White Fir, Junipers (several different varieties), Colorado Spruce, Engle-maSpruce, Norway Spruce, Scotch Pine or Western Yellow Pine. We are not stuck with the Siberian Elm. We could completely eliminate them and still have plenty of trees if enough people felt that way. t, n Candidacy 529-339- 0 Relief Society had its social Tuesday.
