L. Service Hal Massey, of Salina, has recently volunteered service with AYUDA. He will work with the Lamanite natives of Cunen in Guatamala. Mr. Massey has been assigned as Project Director of Cunen and will leave soon to assist in the teaching and training of the native manpower in much needed areas of farming, building crafts, water development and conservation. Mr. Massey said, I am also interested in the economic and resource development of these people, because of the devastation of their plight. Money for crop loan, comes from private investors and the Indians borrowing money for a food crop must secure the loan by a land mortgage. The Interest rate is ten percent per month. A means must be developed for a more equitable arrangement for the Indians to acquire funds for food crop financing. Mr. Massey, who is a member of the Salina First Ward, is hoping that each member of the church will be able to donate just one usable tool, or the equivalent, to the building of this work. Mr. Massey is Superintendent of the Young Mens Mutual Improvement Assn. also Training Coordinator of the Teacher Training program. AYUDA, which is Spanish for help, was organized several project years ago as a to provide medical and dental assistance for the Lamanite" people of North, South and Central America.
