Show one is completely use less you can always serve Reason Enough The fact that figures dont lie is a good reason to stick to a diet. Lay-a-wa- comes the case of the disappearing Jeep - and the night before the season opened besides. Seems Larry Barney of Mt. Pleasant was hunting with Bud Springer of Salina and about 50 others in the Goat Springs district on the West Mountain. His Jeep turned up missing day night just as the group was ready to go to bed. Larry made inquiries about camp but no one had seen the errant vehicle.... and just thought one of the members in the party had hid the little giant. Finally, Bud said, lefs he track it and grabbed a tracks led over to the cliff and about 1000 feet below lay the poor vehlcle...smashed, torn and bleeding., in fact it was really not worth much even for salvage....but it was salvaged. The Jeep was in low range, drive, etc., but guess it just had the urge to commit - oh, the gearboxes harry-karare still good.....but you should see the trail of aspen where the little monster rolled down the hill - and you know the hills are steep on the west side. Based on available information concerning mercury levels in other states, Federal tolerance levels and the limited information available for Utah, there is no evidence that warrants closure of Utahs pheasant season. This position is consistent with decisions made in other states and in Alberta, Canada to hold their 1970 pheasant seasons as established. Generally speaking, these decisions are supported by the following: 1. Though only recently recog- nized, mercury contamination has probably existed in pheasant populations for several decades without any apparent 111 effects. The fact that it does occur gives cause for concern, and additional research, but nocause for alarm. 2. Experience of other states and Canadian provinces indicate the higher mercury levels in pheasant samples taken during the summer periods were markedly reduced in the same areas sampled near or during the pheasant season. Mercury is a common component of commercial preparations of fertilizer, herbicides and fungicides for lawn treatments. Contamination of fish and wildlife could conceivably occur from many of the above uses; however, the most common source of mercury in game birds has apparently been consumption of treated grain. Safe Levels of Contimination To date there has been general disagreement among various agencies as to the acceptable levels of mercury contamination in food. Suggested levels have varied from 0 to 1 of mercury.
