TOTAL CAPITAL ACCOUNTS CAPITAL WOLVES LOSE TO RICHFIELD Board of County Commissioners Dear Sirs: The North Sevier baseball team Editor, Salina Sun: The proposed bond issue for a new court house in Sevier County is ill timed, to say the least. This county has been going down in population the last decade. The farming industry is at an all-tilow. Bad as the irrigation water condition has been the last several years, this year is the climax. Not more of the land can be than irrigated adequately. How can farmers stand a raise in property taxes at this time? Revenue from all other businesses in this county are also on the decline. Since when did the Court House get to be a fire trap and not safe for occupancy? I talked to one who has been in and around the Court House for 30 years. I said, Whats wrong, is the Court House falling to pieces? He said, No, it is inbetter condition now, than it as in 1935. The one corner hassunk a little but that happened many years ago, perhaps shortly after this house was built and it hasnt gotten any worse the last 30 years. The wiring has been renewed twice since 1937. I was County Commissioner from 1935 to 1945. We had drop cord lights then. Now they have fluorescent lighting. As far as fire is concerned, our court house is as safe as any building. New buildings are not guaranteed against fire, thats what fire insurance is for. The Salina Clinic building burned just before it was completed. This happens with any and all buildings occasionally. When I was there, we commissioners were quite proud of our sturdy Court House. There has been no violent earthquake since then, so what has caused all this damage? It just hasnt happened. Recently the citizens in Washington County said, We want to restore our unique old Court House so we wont regret it, and have to build a replica later. They said they could do it for $20,000.00. Our Court House has abeautiful front. It is sturdy, well built and one of the most picturesque landmarks in Sevier County. Any building needs some repairs over the years. Lets beautify this fine old Court House by spending a few thousand on the outside as our neighboringcounty has done on the Junction Court House. It is a tall structure like ours and they have made it m good-looki- beautiful. We can do the same thing without saddling another burden onto the tax payers in Sevier County. Come out and vote No on May 23. W. W. Sylvester Elsinore Sevier County Commissioners Gentlemen: The Board of Directors of the Richfield Chamber of Commerce is ardently in favor of the recommendation that a new Sevier County Courthouse be erected and support them in this decision. It Is felt that if we want to encourage industry and business in Sevier County a fine modern building would create an image of progress In the area, and would enhance a desire to come to Sevier County and establish a business or industry. The Board gives its wholehearted support and feels that the Commissioners are taking a step in the right direction by going forward and progressing at this time. Sincerely yours, The Board of Directors of the Salina Chamber of Commerce wishes to convey to you the support of our Chamber in your plans to build a new Court House in Richfield. We favor this course of action, instead of the other to remodel the existing structure, and feel that it would be well to move as soon as is practical with this plan.
