Teams were used to grade rail lines for overburden dumps in early days of Bingham Canyon Mine. uirent Kennecott Expansion Program Actually Bogan More Than From its beginning in 1904, the Utah Copper enterprise was based on experimentation and engineering research. The first ore was from an underground mine and it was milled in a 300-toper day experimental plant near the mouth of Bingham Canyon. Ever since the story has been one of modification, improvement and advancement. n For example, in 1906 the first steam shovel, which operated on railroad track, bit into the Bingham hillside and began the transformation of the property into an open pit mine. The following mill near year, the experimental mill was replaced by a 6,000-toMagna, the closest source of adequate water. During 1910 and 1911, the company built its own railroad from the mine to Magna to handle the ore formerly carried by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. n 60 Years Ago Later years were to note such expansion projects as a new $12,000,000 power plant and a subsequent $18,000,000 addition to it; a new $22,000,000 electrolytic refinery; a $10,000,000 ore haulage tunnel, and the purchase of a $20,000,000 TtTTVT''TTTTT1PTTT1 Service lletTs ed Private E2 William Crane will leave Charleston, South Carolina August 28, for 18 months army duty In the Panama Canal Zone. By early 1967, Kennecotts Utah Copper Division will have spent more than $100,000,000 over a period to restore copper production to the level of 10 years ago. To achieve this goal, it has been necessary first to increase ore production, and then process the additional tonnage into copper. ar The current expansion project, now nearing completion, means that Kennecott plans to continue as a major employer, key private industry, economic force and responsible community citizen in Utah for many years to come.
