This has been understandable because of the shortage of water. However, it has been proven that a good sugar beet crop, including average tonnage, can be raised and harvested on much less water than was originally believed. is good. This includes the The outlook for 1962, water-wisfrom the North Sanpete upper Sevier, because of anticipated run-othis fine prospect watersheds. Salina Creek and the Despite area, for sugar beets for a good beet growing year in 1962, the sign-u- p has been lagging. We are not in a position to tell ANYONE what they should or should not raise. They know that better than we do. We do know what an adequate sugar beet acreage means to the economy of Sanpete and Sevier Counties, and we do know that sugar beets have gone up in value, and the prospects are excellent for an additional raise this year. Also, we have been informed that the sugar factory will operate if 5,000 acres are planted in the area. At the present time, 3,000 acres have been signed up. This year, there is no limit, and anyone interested in growing sugar beets and establishing a quota, in case one should be inflicted in future years, this is the year to do it. Acreage allotments are sure to return, probably next year. Everyone knows the sugar beet provides one of the best cash crops when and where it can be raised. Other districts will be seeking our quota if we do not use it. For the protection of our economy, we are urging you to consider planting sugar beets in 1962. We cant guarantee anything because we are not qualified to predict the future, BUT WE FEEL HERE IS AN INDUSTRY THAT MEANS MUCH TO THE FUTURE OF SANPETE AND SEVIER COUNTIES, AND IT NEEDS HELP THIS YEAR IF IT IS TO SURVIVE. er two-coun- EDITORIAL ... Lets Brighten ty Up Our Town With Spring Clean-U- p which has been observed in many communiSpring Clean-Uthe United States for nearly 50 yeans, is here again. Citizens of our town are being asked to join in our local Spring Clean-U- p campaign, and brighten up their homes. Its very easy to do your bit Simply take an hour or two to go over the things in your attic and basement or storage areas, and throw out any combustible trash that has accumulated. If you have old magazines and newspapers that you no longer need, throw them out If there is a broken rocking chair or other piece of furniture which you will never use again, throw it out too. The same goes for old clothing, old mattresses, old pillows and other articles which have been gathering dust for years. Combustibles of this type feed fire. Give your basement the same kind of inspection. Throw out old paint cans, old paint brushes, and oily rags. The National Board of Fire Underwriters reminds that by so doing, you will not only clear your home of trash, but eliminate potential fire hazards. We owe it to ourselves to reduce the possibility of fire. 11,700 Fire Fatalities In 1961 Last year in the United States, there were 11,700 fire fatalities, compared with 11,350 the previous year. In addition to the fatalities, thousands last year were injured in fires. Fires in the United States in 1961 cost $1,209,042,000 in property damage alone. It was the highest dollar loss in history, and an increase of 9.1 per cent over the preceding year. It was the fifth year in a row in which fire caused more than $1 billion in property damage. During the last five years, our total property fire losses aggregated a staggering $5,500,000,000. Think what we could have done with five and billion dollars if we could have halted fires altogether. For instance, with this amount of money we could have built 10 Hoover Dams, 30 Empire State Buildings, and 50 Golden Gate Bridges, and still have a few dollars left. It is more than we will spend during the next fiscal year for Federal aid to veterans, space exploration, and foreign economic and military aid combined. It is more than our Federal Government will spend during the coming year on natural resources, commerce and transportation, including highway aid, and housing and community developp, ties in lf With five and one-ha- lf billion dollars, the people of the United States could have purchased 3,000,000 compact cars. A sum of this size could have provided tuition for complete four-yecollege education for more than 900,000 young people. Only by reducing fire hazards, can we hope to slow down the mounting toll in lives and steady upereep in fire property losses. Make Spring Clean-U- p Bang-U- p Job The citizens of our town are asked to make Spring Clean-U- p a bang-u- p job. We can beautify our community by cleaning up backyards, empty lots, alleys, and our streets, parks, shopping centers, business districts, and civic buildings. We will all profit by having made our community spic and span and safe for the coming summer. ar KRILI-KOT- E FLAT WALL FINISH FrL, March 30, 1962 ment. 303 Hunts New Potatoes 13 foot steel truck FOR SALE bed. ARE Salina, e, bar-ro- w THE STORE WHERE THE ROUND DOLLAR PHONE h Everyone knows I am a safe, sane, practical driver, (if you dont know, you do now). And just because I got stuck in two different snow banks Saturday in the Gooseberry area, is no reason to doubt that I am a sane, safe, practical driver. Byron and Elaine Allred had invited Chet and Stella Johnson of Holden; Jerry and myself to their Gooseberry ranch for a steak dinner. Because of the Friday snow, it was felt best to take the little ole Scout, with me drivin. Turned off to Byrons, and got nearly to the gate (50 feet) and all four wheels started to spin the snow wouldnt let them get down to solid footing. Byron and Chet pushed a little, but they needed me. OUT and Jerry behind the wheel to get' back to the road. Returned to Chets ranch to cook the steaks, and was going fine down the road, inside the gate, and only 100 feet from the house when I turned my head to blow my nose, and down in the pit and stuck in the snow again. I believe Byron or Chet turned the wheel when I turned my head, but I cant prove it. Anyway, the steaks were so big AND GOOD it was necessary we have a little exercise. What I what really wanna know is are the Gooseberryites gonna do with all the water they got stashed away in all those snow banks? 89c per lb 3 bunches thats Over-flowet- weather. & Bar S Ham fthsSulinaun Firemen Honor Retiring Member A.G.
