The American Legion assures the City Commission and the people of Salt Lake City that the enterprise will not be burdened with overhead charges, but that the business will be so conducted that essentially all the revenue will be devoted to the Relief Program of the American Legion. Among the veterans of the World War, their widows, their orphans,' are many who are not' been available. H t In 1927, 146 former soldiers sent to hospitals asked for needed relief for the families while they were incapacitated. Eighty-nin- e destitute families of former soldiers were provided with Christmas dinners or otherw'ise they would have gone hungry. 500 baskets of food were sent to former soldiers in hospitals. American Legion officers wrote letters for disabled former soldiers seeking relief through government agencies. 165 cases requiring evidence in adjudication of their claims were .handled incident to obtaining government relief for former ' soldiers. . 750 sets of voluminous papers were prepared (o obtain adjusted compensation for former soldiers. Forty-tw- o former soldiers obtained hospitalization through the efforts of the American Legion. Every former soldier, sailor or marine in hospital is visited every week by American Legion committees and his wants attended to. Representatives of the American Legion appear before the Rating Board of the U. S. Veterans Bureau to present the cases of applicants for government relief. Not one penny derived from conducting boxing matches will be devoted to the ordinary program of the Legion all of which is provided for adequately from the regular funds of the organization. Every available dollar will go to relief work on a scale commensurate with the needs of these men w ho today are suffering as a result of their participation in the World War, the needs of widows of and men their orphans. This is a work the American Legion is proud to take as its to former comrades. It Is the desire of the American Legion to do this work without resort to duty drives or charity other solicitations, but from the proceeds of a legitimate business conducted .along recognized In Nevada. Montana, Arkansas, Main, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado the Stale Legislatures have boxing exclusively in the hands of the American Legion. The American Legion ah handles boxing in Nebraska, though not by enactment. Many cities have boxing under 'American Legion auspices, an outstanding example being the Hollywood Bowl, in California.
