But that opportunity is coming to Elwell as a result of Project Enterprise, the pro- gram under which three Utah State university freshmen are designing experiments to be flown on space shuttle flights in the 1980s. Rex Megill, director of the Center for Research in Aeron-om- y at USU, and R. Gilbert Moore, manager of Thiokol diviCorporations Astro-Me- t sion and an adjunct professor of physics at USU, designed Project Enterprise to put student experiments in the space shuttle. They purchased some of the space made available to universities, businesses and others by NASA for small experimental packages. Stayed In Cup In the film, Jim Elwell saw that water stayed in a cup in spite of weightlessness, because cohesion held the water parti- cles together and adhesion held them to the sides of the container. The liquid assumed a curved shape, moving up the sides of the container a little, and becoming concave in the middle. Melted glass should work the same way, Elwell reasoned. Why not, then, melt a disk of glass in the weightlessness of space, and let it form into a lens-lik- e shape? He began to build on the idea when he learned of the opportunity to design an experiment to be tested in the shuttle. Along with his school load, Jim is spending his freshman year at USU designing the experiment. As a sophomore hell work on testing a prototype. The junior year is targeted for buildling the equipment, and senior year for testing and getting ready for sending the experiment aloft on the shuttle, probably in September of 1981. Two other students received scholarships and the opportun- ity o 'work with professional scientists and engineers at USU in Project Enterprise. They are Dave Edwards of River Heights and Dan Adkins of Hyde Park. ' Provides Access The Aeronomy center at USU provides the students access to university faculty members who will help with design and development of their experiments, and with help on materials to build them. Last summer, Gilbert Moore took Jim to Thiokol to see test firing of the Space Shuttle en- gines, then to Edwards Air Force base for a test flight. During the summer Elwell also did computer work for the Ovt by Ellen Cook always look forward to the days from Thanksgiving to New Years with mixed feelings. I and enjoy the visiting with friends and relatives, but why must they always serve so much food? Things get started with the big Thanksgiving feast of turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberries and pumpkin pie smothered with whipped cream. I am still trying to recover from that one. But the seasonal stuffing doesnt stop there. Out comes the Christmas candy, nuts and oranges. Someone (a good? friend) always gives the traditional box of chocolates. You just hate to hurt anyones feelings so you empty the box in record time. Elwell, a freshman at Utah ite university, will prepare the experiment during his jrse of study at USU and hopes to fly it in 1981. ELWELL center and helped build equipment for taking upper atmosphere measurements from high flying balloons. Hell continue working during his schooling, and that experience will be a valuable part of his education, along with classwork, Elwell believes. He became interested in USU two years ago when he attended a six-wee- k summer mathema- tics clinic for superior students. He plans a double major in mathematics and electrical engineering, and hopes to work with some space related company when he finishes school. Ive been an amateur astronomer since I was very young, he says. That, plus his fathers work as system integration manager at Thiokol Corp., accounts for Jims space interest. His parents are John R. and Francena U. Elwell, who live in Brigham City. Jims twin brother John received a National Merit Scholarship to study engineering at the University of Utah. the piece of glass could be a new way of making lenses, replacing the lengthy grinding process. But there are problems to solve along the way. One of the biggest problems is how to melt the glass. I have to supply my own power, and it takes a lot of power to raise the glass to 1.500 degrees centigrade. I figure about 90 percent of my space allocation will have to be batteries, and only 10 percent the glass and the controls, he explains. Once the glass is melted and shaped, the next problem is dissipating the heat, since there is no convection to carry the heat away from the glass. Jims working on that one. He figures the whole process is going to be a great learning experience, regardless of how the experiment turns out. Q Scholarship Offers Jim had scholarship offers from other schools but chose USU because he liked the high school math institute he attended and because of the Project Enterprise opportunity and scholarship. At Box Elder High he was president of the Math club and vice president of the Debate club. He was region debate champ, state runnerup for math Sterling Scholar, and played first chair saxophone in Band. At the outset, Elwell is primarily interested in seeing if he can solve the problems of getting the piece of glass melted and if it will act the way he thinks it will. But down the road a long way he sees a possible application of the project. If it could be refined and controlled, melting glass into the desired shape by varying the nature of All-Sta- Many Celebrations Many local folks got together site to Harperites and frequent travelers on that road, will now be a family home for the Partridges.
