It gave local voters an opportunity to assess the hopefuls who Candidates for Rranic.ipal office in Brigham City Tuesday expressed views on a variety of questions ranging from pornography to planning aind zoning. The occasion was a public meeting attended by approximately 160 persons in the community center. The session gave candidates for two council seats and the office of mayor an opportunity to respond to questions from the audience. The forum was sponsored jointly by the League of Women Voters, KBUH Radio, PTA, Womens Legislative council and Greater Brigham City Area Chamber of Commerce. Royce Wills served as moderator for the session which was broadcast over KBUH with Sarah Yates as timekeeper. It gave candidates an opportunity to express themselves with just one week remaining before the Nov. 8 city election here. As might be expected, there were some points of general agreement and some instances of disagreement. Virtually all of the candidates believe law has that a state teeth enough to serve Brigham City without enacting a local ordinance. This was the advice given to city officials earlier this year by City Attorney Omer Call. And none of the political aspirants Tuesday evening saw reason to disagree with the attorney. All stood united also on being opposed to pornography in the community. There was more diversity on a question about how the candidates view a joint agreement with the Box Elder Board of Education and possibly county commis i Subjects upon which she will speak and answer questions include food additives and preservatives, honey vs. sugar, food fads and fallacies, fad diet products protein, quackery in medicine, home ground flour vs. enriched flour, saccarin, and generic drugs. Ms. Brunner holds a BS degree in home economics from Miami university in Oxford, Ohio, and a MS degree in nutrition from Case Western Reserve university, Cleveland, Ohio. Previous to joining with FDA she was a home economist with the US Department of Agriculture national school lunch program in Chicago and Washington, D.C. She is also an active member of such professional organizations as the American Home Economics association, American Dietetic association. Society for Nutrition Education, and the American Public Health association. Questions will be entertained from the audience, the spokesman explained. teens charged with vandalism at BEHS, park Two Two Box Elder High school dropouts have been charged with a third degree felony in connection with vandalism at Box Elder High school and John Adams park last Saturday night, according to Brigham City police. Detective Dan Jones and Rus Dean said the have been charged with malicious mischief. They were taken to Moweda youth detention center after their arrests Monday, but were released to parents later, he reported. Jones said nearly $1,000 in damage was done in the two incidents. They said 17 windows were broken out at Box Elder High, including the athletic ticket booth and several panes in the auto workshop. Obscenities were also written in E. Call. He said culprits apparently urinated on restroom doors at the park. The detectives said no motive could be determined for the damage spree. again, taxpayers Its that time again in Box Elder county property tax collection time. And at the county courthouse in Brigham City, personnel of the treasurers office were busy this week sending out the final 1977 tax notices. Treasurer Glen Fife said the county will . mail out about 25,000 notices this yesr more than ever before. The amount collected is expected to exceed $6 million with the county acting as collecting agent for not only itself but Box Elder School district, the various cities and towns and special districts. There is some good news for taxpayers this year. The basic levy (county, school district and mosquito abatement district) is down. A year ago the basic levy was 55.57 mills. But, thanks to a tax reduction adopted by the county commission, this year's levy is 53.95 mills. Of course, if you reside within a municipality or a Special district, your tax assessment will be higher. The highest levy in the county this year 76.26 is being levied in Garland city mills which includes 2,081 city levy and 1.50 mills for cemetery. town levy is Yost which has only a , lowest among the municipalities with a total levy of 54.95 mills. Fife issued a reminder that Nov. 30 is the deadline for paying taxes. Pay early and avoid the rush," is his advice. In addition, taxpayers are reminded that they should bring or send their tax aottce when making payment. . The notice is necessary for the treasurers office to process the payment, he explained. Those who dont make the deadline will be assessed a late penalty plus advertising costs and 8 percent interest after Jan. 1. Fife expects collections by the deadline to be about 98 percent which is normal. Some seven employees in the treasurers office have been working since on the tax notices, each of which must be proof-reaby the assessor. Mayor candidate Peter C. Knudson, a Republican, said he considered a joint agreement the preferable way. Democratic mayoral hopeful William L. Packer said he backed the concept of cooperation among city, county and school board to avoid duplication and to maximum tax dollar use. Wayne E. Call, Democratic council hopeful, said it would take too long for Brigham City to become fiscally able to involve itself in such a project, that a joint agreement would be complicated. I prefer one entity to build it and charge the other entity to use it, he said. Independent council candidate Maribeth Merton said many have told her they're not sure they want such a complex and suggested that the people be allowed to decide through a bond election. Thomas E. Purdue, GOP council candidate, conceded there are varied views among citizens about the need for this u funds facility. He suggested that received by the county might be used to help finance a complex if built, noting that senior citizens have told him a center for them is a priority need. BOX 257-309- 5 Chamber announces slate of candidates The Greater Brigham City Area Chamber of Commerce this week announced that candidates have been named for its annual election. At stake are the office of first vice president and four seats on the chambers board of directors. Nominated for first vice president are Bill Bell, assistant vice president and assistant manager of First Security bank here, and Gary Bywater, owner and broker of Brigham Realty. Clark M. Hillam, currently serving as first vice president, will become president on Jan. 1, 1978, taking over from Bruce R. Christensen who will remain on the board for another year in an capacity. Chamber members nominated for the board of directors include the following: of Paul F. Brown, secretary-treasure- r Flying J Oil, Inc., and owner of the Starlite motel; Dr. David A. Carlquist, Brigham Medical clinic; Richard J. Nielsen, vice president of the Bank of Brigham; Don Olsen, owner of Brigham Floral. Four carryover directors now serving on the board are Glenn Compton, Vernon Drewes, Robert MacFarland and Thelma Somerville. Each has another year to serve. members of the board are Farrel Jensen and Quil Nebeker along with Christensen. Directors whose terms expire this year are Reid Goodliffe, Cliff Graham, Scott Hess and Fred Udy together with past president Norm Thompson and Jeff Packer, chairman of the Retail Merchants association. Richard MacFarlane, executive vice president, said ballots for the annual election are scheduled to go out Nov. 12. Forklift joyride Police reported today they are looking for a joyriding forklift driver, who apparently spent Tuesday night driving a fork lift in the warehouse at Intermountain school. They said someone apparently used a key to get into the building, drove the unit around the warehouse and in buildings 34 and 35, then locked up when he left.
