Show BOX 2 Back in Z's school days the desks were always made for righties. JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, April 20, 1972 ELDER Oh sure, there was always one or two lefty desks, but they were always taken quicker than a flash of Lowers to I There oughta be a Society for the Protests Land Trade Prevention Left-hande- Editor, Over my protest, Brigham City just approved unanimously, as usual, the Mantua exchange of properties of equivalent value. Unable to figure out from the description in the survey the shape of one of the tracts (no survey was made of the other tract) I went to the council for enlightenment which I did not get, as usual also. Therefore I made two inspections over the Mantua by bike. This is what I found: Brigham City trades away a subdivided tract of 3.05 acres, as per survey, with the unbelievable frontage of 1154.12 feet along South Main, a very good road. There is also access to this parcel from another side fronting on a gravel road. Brigham City owns a total of 11.83 acres in this particular tract, of which the whole front is traded off, leaving the rest of the excess d and diminished in property partially value. In exchange for this very prime tract of building site property Brigham City will get a roughly triangular hunk of swampy marshland, along a gravel road on one side and partly Discrimination of Persons. It's always, "Here comes 'Lefty Louie' from the south side." Ya never hear, "Here comes 'Right Ron' from the northside." It's about time discrimination stopped against the southpaws. Here are found cattails, frogs and mosquitoes and black flies. Size: 2.91 acres. No appraisals were made of either property, and the description of the swamp property was apparently from the description on the deed only and not by survey. No appraisals were made for obvious reasons for the two tracts are not of equivalent value. You dont need an appraiser to see that. Mantua people giggled when I discussed this deal with them, for they are alert enough to realize that they got the better of the deal. They have just cause to resent Brigham City as an absentee landowner of a patchwork quilt of land right in their own town. However, this transaction does not at all speak well for the stewardship shown by Brigham City in guarding Brigham Citys interests. You dont need the help of an appraiser to see that building lots right in town are about five times at least more valuable than swamp land down by the dike. Brigham City, in its land dealings, is a bit mercurial as to consistency as to policy. The golf course extension land purchases, as well as those for rounding out John Adams park, were based on appraisals (top secret), while the Mantua exchange was made without same, the mayor telling me simply that they were not needed. In closing, I wish to refer briefly to a very interesting request made to the council just lately by two local citizens requesting that they h Birch be permitted to hook up on the old creek water line, no longer used by Brigham City. What surprised me especially was that there appear to be no houses, bungalows, improvements of any sort in the general area where this hookup is requested. If the city approves this request, as they will, the fur will fly. six-inc- Sincerely, Adolph Kaltwasser, Brigham City. Seeking Ruben Mendez Editor: Where is Ruben M. Mendez? All persons who are at least 15 years old and interested in serving as volunteers are invited to attend. Questions will be answered at that time, a spokesman said. m The ability to communicate verbally with another human being is one of obvious difference between man and higher animals in his environment. The ability to speak has become so common and natural in our lives that we tend to view talking as something that everyone does. We even go so far as to indicate that the female gender has the whole process! (Contrary to popular belief, however, the female vocal mechanism is no different from that of the male.) . r It is'not until we hear the halted speech of a stutterer, the nasal twang of a cleft-palachild, the breath aspects of a swollen vocal cord, and the inability to pronouce certain sounds that we realize that something is not right. Then we realize that this function, this ability to speak smoothly, clearly, and in a correct manner is very desirable. It is at these times that we appreciate the fact that our listeners are listening to what we are saying over-emphasiz- ed attaching a handle to them. HIS (4) Read stories to him way. What about these with tangle tongues, short palates, bumps on vocal cords, and faulty speech sounds, are they destined to spend their lives forever speaking in an undesirable manner? What can be done to enable them to become a better communicator? Much can be done! Palates can be lengthened, bumps can be removed and tongues can be untangled. A doctor can lengthen palates, remove bumps and prescribe pills for swollen cords. speech clinician can teach correct tongue positioning for accurate speech sound production, but all of these effects are concerned with problems in full bloom. A CAN ANYTHING BE done to or minimize speech problems from becoming serious handicapping problems? The answer is an emphatic YES. Since the childs first most impressive teachers are his parents, the influence that you can have on your childs language ability is unmeasurable. You can: (1) Take care of your childs physical needs. Good health is necessary for good speech. A happy, healthy child is more receptive to language stimulation and language expression than an unhappy, unhealthy child. (2) Picture read to your young child. Show him advertisements in magazines and newspapers, have him identify objects contained in these advertisements, can you see the duck? Look! here is some ice I like ice cream, mmmm cream, prevent etc. Hell love it! (3) Help him label his world. Give him the names of objects he handles or sees.
