This will leave control of the building in local hands since the irrigation company is comprised of the several families living in the Lynn area. The school in the past has been leased to the former LDS bishop but there is no longer a ward there. The board had planned to sell the school in bidding but then changed its mind after being contacted by people from Lynn. It was noted that the lease can be broken with 30 days notice. plans to renew testing of its students, a practice discontinued last year, only on a more ambitious scale than ever. The board of education gave its approval last week after the new testing program was explained by Richard Kimber, director of pupil personnel. It used to be the policy to test third, fifth, seventh and ninth grades. But that was stopped a year ago. However, Kimber said the district has received en- couragement to begin again and establish norms at every grade level. In answer to a question from the board, he said the testing will provide data to compare with national norms, noting that it will assist tremendously in local curriculum development. It will establish criteria for developing curriculum, Kimber explained. He said the standardized achievement test includes sections on language, arts, reading and arithmetic. It will be administered each May by the district counseling staff. Tested Last Fall The director noted that grades nine and 11 were tested last fall. It's planned to do grades three through eight this spring and the tenth grade next fall. It was explained that testing booklets have been borrowed from Jordan district and this will result in a considerable cost savings this spring. The expense will be 38 cents per student compared with the normal figure of about $1.15, said Kimber. In other business at the board meeting, the district officials said they would have the architect on the new McKinley school provide some cost information for designing the building to include approved emergency shelter space. Requesting consideration was Box Elder Civil Defense Director George Knavel. Propose Gift Doug Packer and Robert Breitenbeker, representing the senior class at Box Elder High school, asked board approval a for the proposed class gift new sound system for the gymnasium. Breitenbeker said they had received two price quotations and recommended that one totaling $1,982 be accepted. The project will be financed in total by class funds. We are not asking any money from the board, said Packer. They disclosed that the senior class plans to hold its graduation ceremony in the gym this year (rather than in the auditorium) so that more persons may attend. The present system is inadequate for such an event, said Brietenbeker who then proceded to answer several questions with regard to technical aspects of accoustics in the hall. The board gave its enthusiastic endorsement to the project, at the same time praising the two youths for their outstanding presentation. Accept Gift A $100 gift was accepted from Corinne PTA to be matched by $150 from the board for purchase of an electric water cooler at Corinne school. Superintendent J.C. Haws reported that Bear River High school had been fully accredited but that four areas of need were expressed for Box Elder High. We have more singers than can be accommodated in mixed chorus, concert choir and madrigal singers; so we created a new advanced performing group for girls. After they have taken womens chorus, they may audition for membership in the advanced womens chorus. We have about 80 girls to this program at present.
