After stopping Bear River to open the game, Brigham City blocked their punt and gained possession on Bear Rivers line. After two runs by Cary Huff to the 21, a quarterback sneak by Randy Nelson carried to the 15 yard line for a first down. Nelson rolled for five more and Huff broke over right tackle and sped the last 10 yards into the end zone. - Outstanding Game Right guard Kevin DeFries, who played an outstanding game, ended Bear Rivers next thrust when he grabbed a fumble at midfield. After a gallop by Huff, Bear River appeared to have Brigham stopped when, on fourth and 18, Nelson hit Clint Johnson with a pass at the line for the first down. But Bear River held at the three-yar- d line. After forcing Bear River to punt to the BR 30, Brigham moved quickly to score. Big gainers were runs by Huff for 15 and six yards and a pass from Nelson to Cam Hoesel on the four. Huff then blasted over right tackle for the TD and a 12-- 0 advantage. Bear River mounted their biggest threat just before the half. A reverse carried for 25 yards to the 15. They ran for a first down on the five yard line, then moved to the three where the alert Brigham defense recovered a fumble just before the gun. Brigham City received to start the second half, and with Huff and Doug Cook grinding out the yardage, they marched to the Bear River eight, and Nelson lofted a pass to Cook for the touchdown. Lloyd Gunther, manager of the Bear River Migratory Bird refuge, summed up Saturday as being fair. He said hunters averaged about two birds apiece for the first day. The number of hunters was down the first day as compared to past years. Only 529 nimrods showed up, unlike the usual average of 600 to 1,000. Sunday the number dropped to 150 and the average birds bagged remained the same. Bag Increases As clouds moved into the area hunter success increased during the earlier part of this week. Monday the average was four birds per man and Tuesday it increased again to five ducks per hunter. Gunners along the Bear River and in the Corinne area reported ducks were plentiful. Shooting was heavy during the first half hour of the opener but quickly decreased during the hot, sunny af ternoon. Hunters cussed the lack of wind Saturday afternoon as mosquitoes took their toll. Some scattergunners dressed in heavy clothing, soon found out the sun was hot. The season will continue until Jan. 3. Priced to Sell!
