Recently this writer, accompanying his spouse to a local clothes washing establishment, took an informal survey. Mr. Z observed two men their luck come in and try in the "washing game," and several men accompany their wives. At times there were more men than women in the noisey joint. Men are funny in a laundra-mat- . They look guilty, a little uneasy and seem to be thinking, "What's going to happen if Joe sees me in here?" This writer even saw a man come in and use the iron. His finished products were as good or better than any female could muster up. The world is changing. There are women duck hunters, jockeys, fishermen, and race car drivers; while, on the other hand there are men laundra-mateercoin-operat- s. Monday sure was a nice day for fishing, except yours truly didn't catch any fish. The warm spring day was perfect for just sitting around and being lazy. Mr. Z took a little trip up to Mantua and tried his luck. This writer had as much action as fishing in a bath tub. At least in the tub Mr. wash Z might have hooked a cloth or something. Anyway the fishing wasnt too hot. The warmer weather is at History repeats itself, least some things are similar. Mr. Z found a newspaper while hunting in a drawer for something he misplaced. Yours truly picked it up and started reading a story. Ironically the story that caught this scribe's eye had the same sound as a present day story. Yours truly read, "Marines Reverse Red Attack, Battle Back Hard- - fightToward 'Baldy'" ing U.S. Marines, after knocking of the out possibly 3,500 attacking enemy, clamped a firm grip Friday on the first hill ground recaptured since the Communists unleashed their drive. Sound like a Tet offensive in Vietnaml No, not exactly! The attackers were Chinese Reds and the hill was in western Korea. The papers date was March 28, 1953. It looks like we'll always be plaqued with some type of Vietnam or Korea. Letters to the Editor... 48 North Main I Editor; It seems unjust that the Box Elder Board of Education can unanimously make the gesture of providing 38 buses for the Mav 10 activity when all year long students taking field trips of an educational nature must pay the 25 cents per mile plus fuel charFor example, our chemistry students were chge. arged 23 cents per student for bus transportation to the Garland Sugar factory. It should have been 35 cents but after some friendly discussion, 25 cents was agreed upon. It will also be interesting to see whether the drivers are paid and who pays them, because if an educational field trip is taken on Saturday, the driver is paid and the teacher is thanked. It is also unfortunate that the board adopted a school calendar that effectively makes the school year a week longer. By doing this, the board is pror viding additional days of paid vacation for the central-officstaffers, employees. (34 and and numprincipals erous other employees). If a small majority of teachers favor the long calendar year, then they are doing the rest of the teachers and the students an injustice by cutting them out of a week's time and salary during the summer when they could be working. The board favors the long Christmas vacation because they are afraid of excessive absenteeism the I dont Monday and Tuesday of Christmas week. wonder about the sudden concern for ADA money, because absenteeism has approximately doubled in both high schools during the first semester of this year as compared to that of last year because of the lack of teeth in the present attendance policy.
