Some of my readers have been chiding me for not following my own admonition to "stick to the facts" on the fluoridation question. They claim there was no other way to put the question except in the negative. That is not true. The FACTS are that as late as Monday of last week, city officials pleaded with an attorney repsesent-in- g the anti group to turn the question around so we could have a straight for and against vote. He flatly refused. Nor is this an isolated case. a few years back also was stated in the reverse. This is a pattern all over the nation where such votes have been taken. To me there can be but one reason. It is to the advantage of the antis to confuse the issue. And by refusing to change, I am convinced that it was done deliberately. Migrant Council ToMeetTonite tf ffho f(sffil?ir...Zf , Fund No Nood to Debate Editor: With fluoridation, as with any political issue, statistics, endorsements, investigations and assumptions are freely quoted to substantiate the claims of both sides. Before casting a vote, the perplexed citizen is overwhelmed with stacks of material to read and analyze. When this material is of a technical nature, as with fluoridation, the untrained person must rely upon the advice of the experts. On fluoridation of community water, the experts have spoken clearly and unwalveringly. The experts are our national local medical and dental doctors and our health agencies, that we trust daily with our lives. Therefore, there is no real issue concerning fluoridation. The First District Dental society, as a professional and advisory group, does not use debate as a means of advising and informing the public concerning dental health. This society feels that debate of technical data can serve only to confuse. The society emphasizes again, ka unqualified endorsement of the fluoridation of Brigham Citys water supply as an absolutely effective and absolutely safe means of preventing tooth decay. Edwin C. Harrison, D.D.S. Secretary, First District Dental Society Editor: Thursday in your editorial you used the term minority with malice. I would like to add light upon your conception. The residents of Brigham City havent vo:ed on this Issue and therefore your opinion of who is the minority in Brigham City is unqualified. As for the state of Utah, Its stand toward fluoridation puts the minority shoe undisputably on the other foot. Not once in our state has fluoride been placed in the water by vote. The peoples vote in Salt Lake City, Ogden, Clearfield, Provo and Bountiful stopped would-b- e fluoride It is most evident that those proposing this toxic poison are In the certain minority. It Is a fact that those dentists pushing fluoride dont welcome opposition. They prefer telling their d story to clubs and groups in town where the opposition isnt invited and turn down the invitation to meet openly in a Joint effort to present both sides. What are they afraid of? If the dentists really think fluoride is beneficial why dont they advocate pills? Is it because the aluminum Industry has ready for market millions of pounds of byproduct and badly needs to sell It and that pills for every child In Brigham City would use only a few pounds of concentrate? Pills are cheaper, offer better control, and wont disturb the majority of the population that neither wants nor has need of fluoride. Sincerely, Jim P. Madsen Box Elder Migrant Worker Council will meet at 7 p.m. on Oct. 21, In the Thursday, Migrant Opportunity Center loc. ated at 8 West Forest upstairs. This meeting Is a regular slated meeting of the group, and the public Is Invited to attend and hear final reports on sum. mer work In the county, as well as rough drafts of plans for 1966 programs. Each local denomination Is urged to have a representative at this meeting as are public groups representing farmers and employers, health, welfare and education. Whos In Minority? UNIQUE HONOR ' one-side- Editor: In your column you have that it was our intention to confuse the public with 'the wording on the ballot. Your candid advice given in the same column to stick to the facts" should be directed to your source of information, since this acusation is completely untrue. We too feel it would be more fair to the public If, yes could mean yes and no could mean no. Another reason is that in an average election over 15 percent of the public are opposed to any change and therefore vote "no" regardless of the issue, and that "no" vote in this case is a vote for fluoridation. We have tried every possible means obviously including legal counsel, to get the wording changed, but according to the state statutes, this was our only legal course. We have repeatedly invited the local backers of fluoridation to publicly debate our very qualified scientists on the subject and that challenge still stands. The unsigned letter in your paper is obviously another shabby attempt to discredit our committee. We dont have government money to support us as do the advocates of this farce. The interests of the citizens of Brigham would surely be better served if 'the fluoridators would direct their energies to intelligently answering some of the important questions that have been raised, rather than blasting those poseing questions with name calling (millitent minority, emotionally founded, etc.) Some of these are, how do they propose to maintain this "safe level of intake when water consumption varies both with the Individuals and with the seasons? Another is, where is Justification for this attempt through mass medication to deny us our constitutional and free agency? Dennis A. Vail 552 S. 3rd W. Editor: Concerning the letter of Frank Coppln about a woman collecting funds for the campaign. This woman was Mrs. Frank Graf, a very enthusiastic opponent of fluoridation of our water supply. She explained to Mrs. Coppin that her donation would help stop this attempted use of force on all citizens of Brigham City, and It seems that there was a misunderstanding. Mrs. Coppin has been offered her money back. Any others who have contributed may have their money back If desired. I have a complete record of public donations to this fight, for the free agency of those who do not wish to have "cavity free" teeth forced upon them. Any contributors may check with me If they have any doubt that their contributions are actually being used for the purpose intended. From the number of donations, it seems that people In Brigham City still perfer freedom of choice over the blessings" of forced fluoridation. I would like to make ft clear that we also do not like the wording of the ballot. We are giving the proponents an automatic 15 percent advantage, for it Is well understood In political circles that 15 percent of the people will automatically vote against any issue put before them. As creatures of habit many people do not want a change of any kind. We love familiar paths. Joseph K. The issue is quite clear. A yes vote Is a vote for pure water. A no vote is a vote for adulterated water. The Bill of Rights and the rest of the Constitution Is composed generally of negative statements restricting the power of the federal government. Our proposed ordinance prohibits the addition of fluorides to the municipal water. There Is thus ample precedence for such an ordinance. Dayton Ohio passed a similar antifluoridation ordinance and Detroit will soon vote on one. Your editorial stated: Such tactics would never trim-rod- firm.
