Dear Editor: Regarding the question of fluoridation of the public water supply, I would like to submit these thoughts to you. I believe the use of fluoride as an aid In preventing tooth decay is well established, and apparently socialism is also well established. My objection to fluoridation is not that It 'Is dangerous '(though it may be) my objection is in the application, why socialism? I have heard sveral doctors In Brigham City speak out against socialized medicine, yet these same doctors advocate socialism when applied to fluoridation of the water supply. This reminds me of the farmer that met the mailman at his front door and handed the mailman a letter he had written to his congressman protesting excessive government spending, high taxes, and advocating rugged individualism and Individual responsibility, with no government hand outs, and opposed to socialistic trends, and asking for a return to the principals of the As the farmer handed the mailman constitution. this letter, the mailman handed the farmer a government subsidy check. Fluoride is only beneficial to a child for seven or eight years, and after this period it becomes useless. Why make everyone pay for it every year of their lives? Why cant we obtain fluoride through our druggist or doctor instead of through another government agency? Just because we can form a majority at th$ polls, is no justification for forcing everyone to take fluoride daily in their drinking water. By socializing fluoridation, we levy tax on every elder citizen, many of whom are just getting by on small pensions, and forcing this faction of our community, who can least afford It, to pay for It, when only the young working families can benefit from it. Why shouldnt I pay for my families care? Why should I force the elderly to pay for my dental expenses. Let's explore the means by which we can have the benefits of fluoride without socialism. ' Sincerely, Don iL Lawson Stop Fluoridation In reference to the proposal to fluoridate the citys water supply, I urge publication of this letter in order that I might make an appeal to the citizens of our city that we take whatever aotion necessary to stop it. If it is completely safe, harmless and an honest aid to dental health, why are hundreds of men In the field of science, doctors and dentists fighting it all over the United States as well as in many other nations? These men have endorsed statements that Jt is a dangerous, harmful, toxic substance; that it is POISON. Jt gradually causes trouble with the heart, liver, brain, kidneys, bones, skin and causes sterility, as well It causes a as being definately harmful to teeth. substance to form called "Florosis" that eventually pits the teeth and makes them brittle. It ruins them in time 'as well as causes many other ailments. I have been aware of this dangei for some time, and have been very careful to keep my family from ; consuming it. Surely it is unlawful for lit to be forced on me now. 'Fluoride is obtainable to the public only by preHow can we control scription in controled amounts. the amount, when everyones water consumption varies What of those who are possibly alergic to it? Nor is it new to Brigham City. We've argued it out several times in the recent past and it looks like we're well on the way to another community debate. Some people get emotional the question, claim that we're adding poison to our water supply, that it is harmful and dangerous. It was there that dentists stanJ wondering why there was so little tooth decay and started research into the phenomenon. They discovered that the water was naturally fluoridated, containing several times the amount that now is recommended to be added. Yet the people of Hereford, Texas, live as long as they do anywhere, they are just as healthy but they do have better teeth. This same condition exists in hundreds of other communities which have water that is naturally fluoridated. The only valid argument fluoridation that have heard is the one brought out so well by Don L. Lawson in a letter to the editor, to be found on this page, I Signed ..
