Taylor, Burton, director of highways. a part of the program aimed at establishing realistic and reasonable speed limits on state highways, speed limits on many highways previously zoned at 60 mph at night were rezoned to 70 mph day and night. This mileage Is located on seventeen different sections of highway In all regions of the state. The speed limit on each section was raised on the basis of a traffic and engineering investigation showing theneedfor the higher limit. Accidents on the seventeen sections were carefully tab. ulated and analyzed for a period of twelve months before the Increase to 70 mph and after the increase. Traffic volume records were also carefully kept. During the study period traffic throughout the state and on the special study sections Increased 7 percent. The state wide accident frequency In. creased 5 percent. The accident freqency on the study sections, however, decreased 16 percent after the speed limit was raised to 70 mph. Analysis of fatal revealed 8 occurring on the study sections In the year before the speed limit was rals. ed as copared with only 4 fatal accidents during the 12 months after the speed lncrase was placed In effect. The effect of the 70 mph s speed limit on the study was to speed up the slow drivers and slow down the fast drivers. This reduces the dlf. ferences In speeds among vehicles with the consequent Increase In highway safety.
