"Several older farmers have recently Informed us, Mr. Hansen said, "that they have been told to rent out their farms for two years in order to get enough social security credit to be eli gible to receive monthly retire ment 'benefits. If they had fol lowed this advice,., they would have 'received no social security credit. Rental from real estate is one type of income not covered by social security. The farmer who rents or leases his farm either for a dash rent or ore shares does not pay the social security tax on the cash rent he receives or on the share Of the crop he . gets. The person who Is doing the actual farming is now covered by social security, but not the land owner receiving rent. This exclusion applies even though the land owner pays the taxes and water assessments, bears the cost of repairs to farm buildings and equipment, or buys the seed and fertilizer. To be covered by Social security as a farmer, a man must still be in the business of farming.
