Concert Season Opens In Brigham City Tomorrow A Carnegie Hall In Every Town was the motto of the National Community Concert organization, when conducting a campaign October 2 to 8, to gain new members in Biig-haCity. It was a promise of the organization to bring that caliber entertainment to Brigham City people who joined. Membership cards were mailpd out to 1949-5- 0 members last Tuesday, and the first of three concerts, boasting the famous Jorge Bolet, pianist, has been slated for presentation Saturday evening, November 19, at the Box Elder stake tabernacle at 8:15 oclock. The Community Concert group of Brigham City, according to New York critics, has fulfilled the promise. Jorge has been a steady performer at New Yorks Carnegie Hall, is famous throughout South America for brilliant performances, and since being discharged from the U. S. army has toured European music centers. On Wednesday, February 15, 1950, John Carter will perform at the tabernacle. He is a youthful tenor that one New York critic described as having a voice that is of mellow, creamy texture, essentially warm and lyrical, tempered with real punch and resonance. Making all of the membership cards worth twice their cost at the second concert, they will admit a guest at guest night. According to officials of the Brigham City Community Concert group, Harold Felt, president; Earl Madsen, manager; and Jean was inShonka, secretary, guest night augurated to- stimulate interest in this type of entertainment in Brigham City. They feel that after Brigham City people enjoy the splendor of performances by the nations best concert artists, it will not be necessary to solicit memberships for the organization but that they will easily fill out the membership capacity of the local organization. Tile last concert of the season will be the singing of the outstanding classic soprano, m well-focuse- . d, 1 Pierrette Alarie, on March ' 6, 1950 at 8:45 oclock in the evening. Her Career was launched with flying colors on December 8, 1945 when she made her New York debut in the role of Oscar in Verdis Masked Ball on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera under the direction of Bruno Walter. Said Columnist Danton Walker: Shes the best bet yet to wear the crown of Lily Pons. Approaching Winter Will Present Traffic Hazards An elongated Indian summer hangs on, but the winds, whipping around the corners of buildings and whining down Box Elder canyon, are cool reminders of the apporach-in- g frigid weather. They are a reminder of the Aleutian type weather last vv inter, and of the tremendous amount of traffic accidents we had last year. Soon the roads will again be iced, the later the better; there will be rain, snow, ice, sleet and mud for autoists to contend with. The roads will be dangerously slippy. There will be accidents many of them fatal. According to the National Safety council, the motor vehicle death rate per millions of miles traveled, is greater in winter than at If you watch some shop, youd think they were? ing an inventory of the store When you have a surname that is also a common noun or verb or adjective, you just get accustomed to people making puns. Many of the roads in Box Elder county will be particularly dangerous because they wind through canyons and over and around mountains where a skid of a few feet can mean a thousand foot plunge to death. Reasons for the danger of driving during winter are obvious. Reduced visibility is an important factor in the increased incidence in winter motor vehicle accidents. This usually involves one or more of the following handicaps to motorists: longer hours ot darkness, especially during the period of peak traffic; snow, sleet, fog mist or rain obstructing the view through the windshield and rear w indow. It takes from 3 to 12 times longer to come to a full stop on snow or ice than on dry concrete. At 20 m.p.h. it takes from 110 feet to 250 feet to stop on ice.
