Not An Editorial Just Ramblings The first time I met Joe Kouri was in 1916, at the intersection of Fourth north and Second east, Logan. He was in a new sedan, I was a pedestrian, and hi would have sent me sprawling into the gutter when his left fender clipped me if the heel of my shoe hadnt been firmly secured beneath the left tire. abused the English language at him, and he in turn denounced me with strong Arabic polysyllabic words we were best of friends from the start. Following tin tradition of all FSAC students from the Near Fast, Joe wrecked his new auto within a month after he bought it ran into the real- brick wall of his garage. Undaunted but feeling that the accident merely polished his skill behind the wheel, he duplicated his first purchase, and was again master of a hundred horsepower and a couple thousand pounds of steel and chrome. With the new car he set something of a record among the Arabic students at the eollege, driving it three months and a week before wrecking it again. Joe, his real name was Mounir, but he liked Joe better, was a little more than a fair student, hut what he lacked in academic ability he made up for in having fun, lavishly spending money, dating, and wrecking cars. I lost track of Joe when I left the alma mother, and didnt see him until the other day when walking Brigham Citys Main street. It was pouring down cats and horses, and I was dodging from awning to awning. A heat up .'!G eoupe pulled up to the curb and Joe yelled at me, Want a ride. Sure, answered, going to the car before I recognized him. Surprised to see Joe in something other than the latest model of the biggest cars I questioned him about what happened to the fat monthly check he used to receive from Palestine and what he had been doing all summer. I washed dishes 12 hours a day in Wyo- town and any visitor was fairly conspicuous so at least we had the source Finof our approaching doom pinpointed. ally we decided to w rite him a letter. 1 - Autumns are shorter and not quite so sunny, these days, then when we were a boy. We remember one Autumn Sunday afternoon we were out whooping around in Bakes dads truck. Bakes dad owned and operated the telephone company (although he had to hire a girl to help him with the switchboard), and he kept a truck to haul poles and equipment out to the job when hed spend a clay running new lines, after spending the night on the .switchboard himself. On Sundays Bake would get the truck (that was before we got old enough to own our own Model Ts, and none of the parents would let us use their cars), and wed go out looking for fun. mi,:g, he said, and I no longer get checks from liDine. The recent war there tied up all of my parents property. I did You know. lie continued, this summer what only the lowest class of people used to do in my country wash dishes. But nobody looks down on me for it. com try the farmers belong to t'nc In lower cki'-- s of society and I was startled when he told me that after completing- his education next spring he intended marrying a farmers daughter in Wood-- , Cross. A red coat and red hat. it would seem, should he ample identification to segregate a hunter from a deer, hut is it? Now is tin time when the modern hunter dons hi ammunition belt, shoulders his telescope-equippemodern supeu-up- , wartime rifle, and journeys to the mountains and to the marshes, to hunt and kill the elusive fowl and big game. Fnfort'inatelv many of the hunters not equip ed with four fast running legs or speedy wing.-- , will be the recipients of the lead meant for the animals. Indeed a lot of hunters into the brush lit up like a neon sign on Broad d, way with their bright clothing will not return under their own power indicating either tragedy or close calls. All men are imperfect, and mistakes are easily made on the hunt as anywhere else, and hunting accidents are a barometer of the frailty of man. But it is possible to insure the security of the hunter by following the simple rules of safety in hunting. It is accepted by all hunters that guns should be unloaded while not hunting; that red clothing is the safest color to wear giving excellent contrast to the foliage; that guns should be handled with extreme cau-to- n when crossing fences; and that you dont shoot at rustling brush. But do all hunters live up to these elementary rules of hunting safety? Some deer hunting areas will have hunters heavily concentrated in them because of special deer permits this season perhaps a many as one or two persons to the square mile. Extreme caution should be exercised. As hunters we know better than to wear a pair of white canvass gloves because of their similiarity to the back anatomy of a deer. We know enough to keep a gun pointed away from our companions at all times. We know not to snap-shobut to be sure no person is just beyond our target. We know better than to mix hunting and liquor. We know enough to wear warm clothing, change wet clothing, not get overly tired do we do it? On our way back to town, eating grapes, a new coujie drove up behind us. Bake tramped it to the floorboard, but the coupe had more stuff. Just as it was passing us, somehow a buch of grapes got thrown out of the truck. Boy, the way those things did splat and splatter on that coupes windshield!
