The occurence of such outbreaks is not frequent enough to indicate that campfe, are a special hazard. 26. If Cases of poliomyelitis occur at a camp, should the children be sent home? This will depend on the number of cases, the spread, the opportunity for isolation, etc. It is wise to discuss the situation with the health officer of the state where the camp is located. Generally, there is no good reason to bring the contacts home, unless cases keep on cropping up. One should keep in mind that the contacts have already been exposed and that bringing them home does not expeli the virus if it has lodged in the body of the contact. There is no good evidence that poliomyelitis is spread by wafer. The crowding of children should be discouraged, whether in swimming pools, at parties, picnics, etc. There is no objection to swimming or bathing per se, but avoidance of chilling. and fatigue is important. 24. Should children be permitted to travel during the months when poliomyelitis is prevalent? There is no objection to travel as such. It would appear unwise, however, to take children from a community relatively free from poliomyelitis to one with a high incidence of poliomyelitis. Long trips may cause c S28-30-p- d I89-R3- cepuble to than women. The ference is not great enough to in the discourage summer months. Children born to women who have poliomyelitis during pregnancy or labor are normal. 21. Is there a relation between activity and the paralytic form of poliomjVlitis? There is evidence to suggest that fatigue in the early stage of poliomyelitis may influence adversely the extent of paralysis. It is, therefore, wise to prevent children from becoming overfatigued during the poliomyelitis season. Parents should be cautioned, however, not to restrict their childrens ordinary activities. 22. Should children be kept out of schools, nurseries, etc. during the poliomyelitis season? There is no good epidemialo-gireason for keeping children out of schools. Experience does not indicate that the closing of schools causes an epidemic to abate nor does it indicate that an opening of schools during an epidemic causes an increase in A cases. possible exception might be a community in which poliomyelitis cases are on the increase at the time schools are scheduled to open. When the occurrence of cases is definitely on the downswing at the time of school opening, there has been no evidence that the opening retarded the regression of the disease. There may be more reason for postponing the opening of schools drawing pupils from scattered areas, particularly if some of the pupils come from areas with unusual prevalence of poliomyelitis. Each case, however, will have to be decided upon its own merits. If schools open in a community in which poliomyelitis is still prevalent, care should toe taken in the physical education and athletic programs to prevent excessive fatigue of students, since there appears to toe some relaunusual fationship between duals? of The expectancy at the time tigue and the development di- of onset is that about 50 percent the paralytic form of the will ultimately emerge free of residuals, about 25 percent will have physical limitations reabout sulting from residuals, 15 percent will have severe resIN iduals, and about 5 percent to 10 percent iwill succumb. 19.
