Show TV LOG Cable TV . . . how does if work? CATV or CABLE TV: How does it work, and what does it offer? If you cant lower the mountain, then raise the antenna. That was the original maxim on which the cable television industry was founded, back in the days when T.V. broadcasting was in its infancy. What we call cable television today was known at birth as community antenna television or CATV. Back in the late 40s, television was' just an infant itself. In 1946 there were five TV stations on the air in the entire U.S. and a total of 5,000 sets in use ... all of them with screens about the size and shape of a pie pan. By 1947 there were 12 stations on the air; in 1949 there were 50 and by 1950 there were more than 100 stations. And the number of sets in use increased even more to 150,000 in 1947 and rapidly then to 3Vi million by 1949 and nearly 7 million by 1950. This is where CATV entered the picture . . . literally as well as figuratively. In order for residents of suburban and rural communities to enjoy this new medium of television, they would have to be able to receive the limited signals from the nearest ... large city. Sometimes these areas were too far away for mountain prevented the TV signal from moving across the terrain. TV Towers So in Oregon, and Pennsylvania, enterprising business men put a TV tower on top of a mountain and ran a cable to homes in their community. For a fee, these small-tow- n folks could now see the same shows which were available in Philadelphia and Seattle: I Love Lucy, Miiton Berle, Howdy Doody. Because the programs were carried via cable, the picture was better than from over - the - air signals picked up on rabbit ears on roof - top antennas. And since there was no problem of channel frequency interference, more stations could be brought in, even some channels from distant cities. In 1959 about a half million homes across the country were wired for television. By 1965, " TERRACES The frank, frequently shocking but always human drama surrounding a handful of interesting people who share adjoining e terraces in a apartment building unfolds in Terraces, an NBC Movie of the Week repeating on Tuesday, Dec. 27. Today, there are more than eight million cable television homes in the U.S., with a jump to 28.5 million homes predicted by 1980. The popularity of cable television has been due not only to its ability to overcome geographical barriers but also to its capability for delivering a superior, interference - free picture plus greater channel variety. The function of a cable television system is to distribute television broadcast signals from an appropriate antenna site, simultaneously to many home TV sets. The major elements of a cable high-ris- television distribution system are: antenna, headend, coaxial Martin. cable and distribution amplifiers. Antenna Antennas are mounted on a tall tower at a site selected for good reception of the desired television signals. This arrangement enables the cable TV system to receive TV stations beyond the reach of the oridnary home receivers and rooftop antennas.
