Anyone who saw the U cage crew in action at Box Elder High school Friday night must have been impressed. Displayed was a blend of veteran hoop talent and a host of promising newcomers to the Ute camp. They have size, speed and shooting ability. They'll be tough to challenge for the Western Athletic conference title they won in 1976-7The Utes appearance here in an intrasquad game was sponsored by the Purple Pride Boosters club. The purpose was to give local fans an opportunity to see some university basketball. And to raise funds for the Box Elder High athletic program. It was a success on both counts as an estimated 1,400 persons showed up for the occatop-flig- sion. ketball. They werent here just to take up time. And why not? Despite the return of four regulars from last team, years nationally-ranke- d starting roles havent been assigned yet. Returning squadman Coby Leavitt the personification of hard work, had a good night, grabbing eight rebounds and scoring 11 points. And Greg Deane, the scrappy 5 forward, a starter last season, had five assists and 10 points. Coach Jerry Pimm said after (5-1- take-your-pi- take-charg- (6-9- ), was pleased with what he saw. What hes after at this stage is to get a blend of the Utes veterans and newcomers, to work out the wrinkles as they jell as a team. He admitted to the presence of high competition on this years squad, that some of last years starters may indeed feel threatened by the skillful crop of younger players. He cant feel too bad about it. He has the security of more depth and can feel optimistic about his team's rebounding ability as the new campaign approaches. Last years team was good. But it didn't dominate physically. The secret of success was team play. Biggest loss from last year is guard Jeff Jonas, the man who turned on the machine and kept it fine-tune- This year will give the Utah team a different look with more accent on the inside game. It may see Jeff Judkins move guard position. Thats the way it was with a starting combination here Friday last seasons four regulars with to a Vranes on the forward line.
